I've finished implementing the new version of guestbook code on my site. I'm amazed at how easy it was for me to cobble my many modifications into the new code.

Thanks again for some great code Andrea!

Thank you!! The guestbook is used for a funeral home, so there are several and I was afraid I was going to have to redo each of them. I think the original site owner is using a older version as there a far fewer files than your current version. Thank you again, you are a life saver!

Jenn, can you login to admin.html and check if the configuration is still correct after migration? You will find the password to login in include/conf.php

Posted by AndreaFebruary 21, 2012 - 11:59 am
Jenn, the guestbook html file itself needs to be writable (666 permission)

I am hoping someone may be able to help. We recently took over a website from another company, PHP Guestbook was being used in the site. Now that I have the site transferred onto our server the guestbooks are not working. I uploaded all of the files that they had with-in the original FTP and get the error, "The Guestbook html file is not writable! Check the file permissions and try again. Good Luck." Do I just need to reset the permissions to be:

“posts” folder - 777 or 755
main folder - 777 or 755
“verify.png” - 666
“include/conf.php” - 666
“guestbook.html” - 666

Or is this something that has to be done with-in the administrative panel?

Thank you,
Jenn

Kristian, are you positive that both include/default_conf.php and include/global_conf.php are chmoded to 666? Sorry to ask again, however I am puzzled by this "you dont' have permission to access /wcs/php_guestbook.php", since the mere display of the admin section indeed requires that this file is accessed.

I had a similar problem. The install instruction imply that ALL php files need per missions of 644. When I copied mine up to the server I found I had to change most of them to 644. Hope that helps I really am a novice with this.

Andrea,

Thanks for the quick response. I am on a UNIX server.

Tried permission 777 and 775 for wcs and gbooks. the include files are at 666.

does it matter that to access it must go to www.kristiankeith.com/kristiankeith/wcs/php_guestbook.php? do I need to add .. before link to the /kristiankeith/wcs/php_guestbook.php?

JFK and Kristian, please check that the config files have a 666 permission and the posts folder a 755 or 777 permission.

Posted by kristianFebruary 20, 2012 - 03:08 pm
actually this is my exact error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /kristiankeith/wcs/php_guestbook.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I am running into same error as JFK

Loaded all and set permissions. Can access admin.html and Configure Guestbook settings - but as soon as I Save it tells me

You don't have permission to access /Comments/php_guestbook.php on this server.

Sorry I've been using http://thundering-third.org/guestbook/guestbooknew.html

Andrea
Everything is working as advertised. Then I tired to customize the html code for guestbook.html and the smallest change causes
some of the buttons over the this text area to quit working.
see http://Thundering-Third.org/guestbook/guestbook.html
I also tried numerous changes like just the title and still have the same results? Any ideas?

ok will do that.
btw Thanks Again

I wonder if you are missing some files. May I suggest you clear up everything and start from scratch. Just:
- unzip
- upload
- set permissions

Then check you admin area, it does not look good at all right now.

Can you post a private message with the address so that I can login and see what you have in admin.

Posted by DennisFebruary 18, 2012 - 04:53 pmthun3905@earthlink.net
No it's a unix server.
I just followed the directions where it tells you to go to log into to admin.html and configure guestbook. It keeps giving me a timeout when I try to save changes also.
I tried a sample guestbook post but it told me I exceeded number of lines on a one sentence test.

Dennis you should not see this in admin/configuration. There is something wrong in your installation. Are you on a windows server?

Posted by DennisFebruary 18, 2012 - 04:36 pmthun3905@earthlink.net
How do you change this class statement to reflect your email address.
It's from the config menu for Admin's email address
class="config_form_input"

thank you
Dennis

Posted by DennisFebruary 18, 2012 - 04:06 pmthun3905@earthlink.net
thanks yes I did change the file permissions.

Posted by AndreaFebruary 18, 2012 - 03:50 pm
Dennis no. I suggest you read the readme file, everything you have to do is in there. You have to change some files permissions.

Posted by DennisFebruary 18, 2012 - 03:45 pmthun3905@earthlink.net
Thanks, one other question do I have to create a database?

Posted by AndreaFebruary 18, 2012 - 03:23 pm
Dennis, if you use it "as it is", the only thing you need to change in configuration is the e-mail addresses. There are 2 addresses, that are used in the same messages: one is the FROM field (guestbook e-mail) and one is the TO field (the admin e-mail). All the other options are optional, in particular if you use a page called "guestbook.html" as guestbook page.
Good luck!
