Rick, sound like php is not active anymore on your server, browser should not matter. Try visiting with firefox and see if you get the same. Again sounds like PHP is disabled on the server, not a local problem.

I used to be able to set up this guestbook without any problems. Then I installed IE 7 and when I go to admin.html page, put in password a window opens asking if I want to open or save file. If I open it opens a php editor, is this something in the version I am using or is there a setting in IE Explorer 7 I don't have set correctly?

Thank you and have a great day.

READ THIS if you are considering this product

I am writing to let you know about the excellent support I received from Andrea regarding a problem I had with installation. The problem was something on my end, and Andrea provided advice throughout the day. When I was still unable to resolve the issue, Andrea logged onto my website and fixed the problem for me. My guestbook is now up and working like a charm!!!

This happened on a Saturday. This service was for the free version of the software (I haven't spent a penny YET). This is a level of service I have rarely encountered among even large corporations.

If you are considering this product, I can wholeheartedly tell you that you won't be disappointed with the kind, professional support you'll recieve if you should encounter a problem.

I just thought you should know,
and I wanted to publicly say THANK YOU to Andrea

Ray, a php page is the same as an html page for the script. If you change the page you have to update the guestbook page name in admin configuration and remember to grant the 666 permission to the guestbook page.

Youhave a great guest book, easily configureable, but I have a problem. In your pdf file you say to:
    - Set the permissions of the main folder to writable (777). Some windows servers require this
permission to be set to 755 instead
    - Set the permissions of the "posts" folder to writable (777). Some windows servers require this
permission to be set to 755 instead
    - Set the permission of the include/conf.php file to 666 (read and write permission by all)
otherwise you be unable to edit the guestbook configuration
    - Edit the html guestbook file as described below and then grant 666 permission to this file:

I don't know how or where to do that, can you help me on that.

In comments published in the Los Angeles Times and confirmed Thursday by his spokeswoman, attorney Ed Chernoff said his client did not know which drugs Jackson might have been taking or whether he was addicted.

"When he accepted the job, he was not aware of any specific requirements regarding medications that Michael Jackson was taking or any addictions that he was suffering from," Chernoff told the Times.

In a quote confirmed by his spokesman, Chernoff said that it was only after Murray moved to Los Angeles in May that "he realized that Michael Jackson had some very unusual problems."

Murray did not conduct drug tests on Jackson and had no way of knowing, other than from Jackson himself, whether he was taking other drugs, Chernoff's spokeswoman, Miranda Sevcik, told CNN.

Investigators, trying to determine whether anyone should be charged in Jackson's death, have searched Murray's home and two clinics for evidence of drugs he may have given the singer.

One search warrant implied that police suspect Jackson was a drug addict. It said there was "probable cause to believe" that the searches would uncover evidence of excessive prescribing, prescribing to an addict, prescribing to or treating an addict and manslaughter.

It also cited "probable cause to believe" that the premises contained "records, shipping orders, distribution lists, use records relating to the purchase, transfer ordering, delivery and storage of propofol (Diprivan)."

    HI,

I just downloaded your free script. Not bad. I need more than this offers so I am thinking of paying the 20 for the full version. I want to know is it easy to add more text to the form so I can get more info than just the name and email?
I would like to add their location and possibly their url name.

Also, the free script works fine, accept everytime you make and entry, it takes the "powered by" off the page and when you want to enter another entry, a page says you must have the link back for this script to work.

    Posted by AndreaJuly 22, 2009 - 05:32 am
    Iris,

I suggest you start over and follow instructions carefully, you are clearly having a permissions problem. For the folders (guestbook and posts) first try 777 for both. Then, if you have problems, change both to 755 and then try posting again.

This is about it, there are no secrets.

Some rare hosts do not allow php files to be set at 666 (you need this for the conf file). If this is your case, I suggest you change script.

    Best Regards-Andrea

    Posted by IrisJuly 22, 2009 - 05:24 amPrivate
Well, the result is I can't even login the admin ... Yes I have a free version.

    Posted by AndreaJuly 22, 2009 - 05:09 am
    Iris,

The script must be able to create files within the posts folder. This generally requires 777 or 755 permission for the posts folder. If you cannot see the posts and log files within the posts folder, it means that the permission is not right. I can't help on how to set the permissions on your particular server, your host might help maybe.

Did changing the conf to 666 solved the configuration problem?

Are you using the free version?

    Best-Admin

    Posted by IrisJuly 22, 2009 - 04:56 amPrivate
Thanks for the answer, but I wasn't successful. First I changed the conf to 666 and then only the folder "posts" to 777 and then tried with 755 and it didn't helped. Then I tried to change tho whole "posts" folder with all it's files to 777 and 755 and this was the error: ".../posts/gbook_log.txt. Note that the CHMOD command is only available on Unix FTP servers, not on Windows FTP servers." What should I do now?
And I can't see the posts.txt and gbook_log.txt files in the "posts" folder eighter on the FTP.

    Posted by AndreaJuly 21, 2009 - 07:12 pm
Hello Iris, for the configuration, make sure the conf file has a 666 permission. For messages logging, make sure the "posts" folder has a 777 permission or 755 permission (one of the two is right, try and see). Best-Admin

Hello Eddy, did you upload the files to a server? From your message it sounds like you are trying to use the script locally on your PC, which will never work. Also, the server needs to have PHP active in order to work.

I have solved all my problems. Im pretty savy when it comes to tweaking code. If you could point me in the right direction, I could give it a shot. The scheme is really off from the rest of my site and Id like it to all be the same.

    Thank you!

    Posted by AndreaJune 22, 2009 - 01:33 pm
Scott, so I assume you have solved the "not sticking" issue. To customize the posts, edit the "posts template" field in admin/configuration. Customizing the captcha page requires heavy digging into the code, not easy.

Scott, make sure your include/conf.php file has write permission (666). Some rare hosts do not allow a 666 permission for .php files. If this is the case for you then you might find it hard to use the script on your server.

RE: Static date entries. Well my web hosting service (hostmonster.com) says it's not their problem. That the programmer must solve the problem. I forwarded your explanation to them but they seem to believe all their settings are correct. A real bummer for me as I really like your program and it works great on a different web hosting service. So I'm at a loss here as my web service will not work to resolve this issue. I appreciate your efforts.

I recently changed web hosting services and now my message board entries are reflecting a static entry date of December 31, 1969 5:00pm. Is this an php coding or the web hosting service problem. You'll notice the problem on http://1979-1980lhsreunion.webevolutionary.com/feedback/messageBoard.html The last 7 entries' entry dates are exactly the same. thanks

Is there any limit to the amount of text someone could write in the guest book? I mean, if I wanted to add it to my site so that people could tell of their wonderful experiences at my club, would they even be able to go into any kind of detail?
Here is something I patched together from a few other macros/code snippets. Its very simple Lipsum generator, but instead of latin it is corporate jargon, which makes about as much sense as the latin sometimes
    :P

The actual generator code/idea was borrowed from the mac widget http://www.doubleforte.net/widgets/corporate/ so they deserve the credit for it, not me. The rest of the code that puts the lipsum in the paste buffer was borrowed from a macro that Sean Coates made awhile back.

    Hi, Andrea,
    Noted, thank you!

    Posted by AndreaApril 05, 2009 - 09:19 am
Colin, under some IE browser configurations the captcha page needs to be reloaded, to get a fresh code, every time you post a new message, if the messages are posted in a short time lapse. However most visitors will just post one message, so this is not a real issue. And yes, you can turn off verification in admin however, sooner or later, you will be spammed so this is not a good idea.

    Posted by ColinApril 04, 2009 - 08:53 pmPrivate
    A bit more info...
Adding my guest book site into IE's "Trusted Sites" security zone seems to resolve the issue of displaying the Logged IP address page... BUT I seem to have to always refresh the verification number page to get a new number. Can I just turn off the verification somewhere?

    Posted by ColinApril 04, 2009 - 08:34 pmPrivate
I seem to be getting the issue where when posting it hangs at the "logging IP Address" screen after putting in the verification. This seems to happen with IE but not on Firefox Could you assist please?

    Posted by AndreaApril 02, 2009 - 03:18 pm
Judy, with the free version or enhanced version you need an installation (folder) per html guestbook page.

Hi, Andrea, thank you for your reply to my question on 3/21 regarding the admin page. I tried your suggestions with the CHMODs and got a flashing screen. I'm going to take another pass at it. In the meantime can you please clarify for me ... I would like to do several different guestbooks on my site, do I need to have duplicate folders or can I just copy and paste the code and use one download of Easy PHP?

I have limited Internet usage so thanks for your patience on my sporadic replies.

Julie, it looks like the form action is pointing to a different domain with respect to where the guestbook is located. In addition, the page is framed, which makes the configuration more complex. My suggestion is to first test the guestbook "as it is", that is simply upload everything into a folder (the "guestbook folder", see the readme file), set permissions, try to login to admin, configure, make a test post. Once you have this working, you can setup the guestbook for your client with a clean understanding of how everything is supposed to work in a "simple" environment. Is this the first guestbook you set up with this software?

    Hi Andrea,

This is a great application! :) I seem to be stuck on accessing the admin area to configure it. All of the files are in one main folder with appropriate permissions set. The host (www.fatcow.com) fully supports PHP 4.3 or higher. As a test I have successfully set up B2Evolution which also requires PHP support. When I try to access (logon) the admin file I get inconsistent results. The first 3 times I got a 500 (The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request. The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.) Then I was able to logon to the page successfully and started updating the entries. When I tried to save my entries, the page morphed into another 500 error. I rechecked all the permissions and the instructions, but was unable to find any inconsistencies. The website url is: http://pfannde.fatcow.com/SadieIndex/SadieHome.html
The url of the error page is:
    http://pfannde.fatcow.com/SadieIndex/MeetSadie/php_guestbook.php

Any insight you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!
    Julie

Richard, if the server offers to download a .php file, most likely PHP is not active in your account, and the server does not know how to handle the files. I suggest you seek the assistance of your host to solve the issue.

Hi there, sorry to get the most common error but when I try to post on the guestbook or type in a password on the admin section I get an Internet Server Error. I tried changing the permissions between 777 and 755 but it still doesn't seem to work. This is in the website root folder as oppose to a guestbook folder, do you think that would make a difference? Thanks, Richard.

Hi Naveen, we only accept paypal at the moment. I see your point about paypal and intangible things, however please be assured that we do provide full refund if the product does not meet expectations. We did not have a single complain from the time we started to distribute the script as we provide full tech support and refund the donation if for any reason the script cannot be installed properly or does not meet expectations.

    Ok two things.

First do you accept payment by any other means besides Paypal. I refuse to do business with Paypal as they do not protect buyers of intangible things.

If not then would you be open to to a barter arrangement. I can present your website URL wherever I put up the form. I have 12+ pages and 131 double opt in subscribers on my site. I can offer this free advertisement for one full year.

Andrea, I tried your fix and it didn't work on my computer so I went to another computer that has never accessed that site and got the same captcha and the same result. It like whatever code is used to create the captcha, it's "locked up"?

    Posted by AndreaFebruary 24, 2009 - 04:12 am
    Hi Randy,

It is a browser caching problem. Simply reload the captcha page to get a fresh code before posting. Mind that most visitors will post once and never experience the problem. On posting twice in a short period of time, browser caching can occur under certain circumstances and lead to the problem you report. Again, just refresh the captcha before posting.

I have the premium loaded to my site and everything works fine if the captcha is set to no. When it's yes, after I enter the message and submit, I usually get the same captcha code each time and when I submit the code I get a logged ip message and no post.

    Andrea,

I have been using your wonderful guestbook now for about a year. I actually have two installs of it on my site for different purposes. One of the installs is now giving me some trouble. When somebody posts an entry and following the little captcha, the only results is a message saying that the IP status has been logged, and no entry appears in the posts.
What is wrong? I have checked all the permissions as I thought that may have something to do with it.
The address of the install is http://www.bambooland.com.au/guestbook_wwoof/guestbook_wwoof.htm

Brent, I tried to post on your guestbook and got a 500 server error rather that what you report. This could be due to wrong permissions. You could try to change the folders permissions from 777 to 755, this could solve the issue.

    Chad,

Most likely you subtly mispelled the "guestbook page name" variable in admin/configuration. For example, for this very guestbook, this is set to free_php_guestbook_test.html.

A frequent error is to have a .html instead of .htm or vice-versa.

I'm updating the design to my website and I've run into a problem with the guestbook. When there are multiple pages, on the second page, the "previous" link doesn't go back to the original page but instead attempts to go to page_1 or whatever the first page would normally be called when using the guestbook as such. The "first" link does go to the right place though. Any way to fix the "previous" link on that one page?

    Posted by AndreaJanuary 19, 2009 - 09:57 am
Lonnie, unfortunately I am not familiar with windows XP as server software, so I cannot give specific advice. The point is that a few files need a write permission (the script must be able to modify them), this is tipically a 666. Some folders need the permission for the creation/editing of files in them, that is the script must be able to create a new file inside the folder(s). This is 777 on most linux systems and some windows systems and 755 on many windows servers and a few linux server. I suggest you google XP server file permissions, you will surely find a lot of information on the topic.

Erik, first, try to assign a 755 permission to the folders, instead of 777. If this does not work, see if you can access the server error log to get more information of what is going wrong, a 500 server error by itself unfortunately is not very informative.

    Hi Admin,

Thanks for making this nice little script. I've noticed some small little problems though. The first problem was with the naming of the additional pages. It's easy to change the name in the configuration page but you can't change the html extension. I had to change it to php myself by making some changes in classes.php. I think it's working correct now.

An other problem lays in the automatic menu of the additional pages. When I skip to the next page and go back to the previous, it sends me to a page that isnt there: page_1. I noticed that this bug can be seen on your site as well. I hoped I worked this around by calling my very first guestbook page: page_1.

The third problem lays in the pop-up page when clicking on the 'add a smiley' button. In explorer I get the little message that there was a mistake in the page. It says that 'mylink' isn't defined. I've seen this mistake on your guestbook as well. Is there a way to fix this?

    Kind regards,
    Dennis

Greg, I personally found it impossible, on a godaddy windows hosting, to grant the correct permissions so as to have the script working. Problem was solved by migrating to godaddy linux hosting, they will do it for you on request. No problems reported on other windos hosting services.

chmod changes like to 666 are required on Linux Servers, not Windows based Servers......Does your Windows Server run php ? Some don't, they use asp.....

    Posted by GregDecember 31, 2008 - 06:08 pmPrivate
I'm missing something here. I'm trying to add this to a site I've hosted on GoDaddy. They use Windows servers, so I've gone into my account manger app and have been able to make the folder permission changes, but was unable and told "you can't make permission changes on individual files with a Windows server" so I cannot make the 666 changes referred to in the documentation. I tried to overcome this by making the changes at the parent folder level, but have not had success. I am experiencing two issues. 1) I am now asked for a username & password when I try to access my guestbook. 2) Any changes I make to the admin page do not "take". I either get incorrect password when I try to change the password, or no changes happen if I keep the existing password and just try to make the other admin changes. I'm happy to make the upgrade to the paid version if you think we can get this working. Regards & Happy New Year!

Michael, if the captcha does not show it is either a gdlibrary issue (bad install?) or a permission issue. Check out for a config change that requires different permissions for the script to write a file to a folder? Try 777 instead of 755 or 755 instead of 777?

    Thanks Andrea,
This appears to be a server issue as a new install does the same thing. I'll look over my server settings. Any ideas you may have would be welcome.

Hi Michael, try a new test installation on your server, in a separate folder, to see whether this is an installation or a server problem.

The php script uses "short opening tags". This is fine, but newer versions of php do not have "short opening tags" enabled by default. It was only after a couple of hours of research that I was able to determine this as the cause of my issues... and then I had a fully working install.

I'm not sure a neophyte would have necessarily been able to figure this out?

Mike, I agree that the html of the template could be written better. I will take your advice and work on it. I should say though that this html, as it is, works well on any browser. Also, many people will never use the template but rather just plug in the form in their own html pages, which is in fact the strength of this script with respect to other guestbook scripts around.

Thanks for your feedback, hope you will enjoy the software.

    Best-Admin

    Posted by MikeDecember 04, 2008 - 11:40 am
The tool is handy indeed. Just what I was looking for, no php knowledge needed. If you'll take feedback though, the code from the html files is dreadful to look at: no doctype, proper opening/closing tags missing, mixture of CAPS & lower case, not tabulated... Looks like it could do with some clean up.

    Posted by AndreaNovember 29, 2008 - 01:55 pm
Aaron, front page extensions should not interfere with the guestbook. You can customize because you can turn any existing html page into a guestbook, and also control the appearance of the posts to suit your page design and style. If unsure, just download the free version and play with it. It is fully functional, just missing a few advanced options with respect to the enhanced version.

    Best-Admin

    Posted by AaronNovember 29, 2008 - 12:36 pmAlien@AlienDeceptions.Com
Does this work on a sever that has FrontPage Extensions installed on it?

I also notice that you say that we can customize a guestbook, but can it be added to a .DWT page, if not can it be added into the existing HTML of a site that already has a theme structure to it?

    Posted by AndreaNovember 25, 2008 - 06:26 pm
Susanna, Dan's problem was related to a setting of the moderation mode (not available in the free version), so it was not really a spam problem, but rather a simple configuration issue. So this does not relate at all to your situation. Spam is very well controlled in all versions, you don't need to do anything special to avoid it.

    Posted by AndreaNovember 25, 2008 - 01:14 pm
Susanna, the text in the captcha page can be found and edited in include/lang/eng/lang.php, captcha_pag_warn variable. I suggest you use a dedicated source code editor such as pspad.com to edit the file.

The e-mail validation could be added as a custom feature, some code should be written ex-novo for you. It could be added to the public release in a while, not sure about timing though.

Hi, I've been using this guestbook on my site and it works great!! However, I have a questin regarding how the date/time of posts is generated. I live on the east coast (EST) and when I make a post to the guestbook, the post time displayed is one (1) hour earlier than the actual time. Is there a way to correct this?

Okay, thank you, Andrea. It solved. Previously, the posts folder had 755, and now I changed it to 777, and works perfectly. Now the last question is:

After I'm making a post, the guestbook is jumping here: http://www.verabella.hu/easy_php_guestbook.html
instead of jumping back to the site, for example here:
    http://verabella.hu/vendegkonyv.html

    Posted by AndreaNovember 11, 2008 - 09:19 am
Agatity, I think your permissions are not correct. In particular the posts folder should have a 777 or 755 (depending on the server config) to allow the posts file to be created. Your posts file was not created, so you only see the last posted message, however basically this not OK, the messages are not stored in the flatfile, you have to fix this in order to have a guestbook that remembers the posted messages.

Also make sure the guestbook html file has a 666 permission, not sure this is so right now.

Okay, sorry, I'm a bit lamer. I solve the problem, but I have two others. (http://verabella.hu/vendegkonyv.html)

First of all, the guestbook shows only 1, the latest post. Is there any chance to show for example the latest 10 posts? And then show pages?

Second: when somebody posts, after the posting procedure, always getting here: http://www.verabella.hu/easy_php_guestbook.html

Is there a place, where I can tell the php, which site to jump after the procedure?

Hello Sultan, how annoying!! You could:

    - complain to your host and explain you need your permission to be left alone
    - change host (good idea)
    - write a script that changes your permission every day, right after your host do and run it under crontab

Personally I would try to explain the situation to my host and then change host if they do not leave my permissions alone.

    Best Regards,

    Andrea

    Hello,
I have been using your PHP Guestbook for 2 years with no problems at all. However, the host server configuration has been changed so that files' permissions are being changed every day to be 644 instead of 755 due to security issues! As a result, visitors are not able any more to add thier comments unless I change the permissions back to be 755, which I do every day!!!
Is there any thing I can do to overcome this problem?

Charlie, when you change the e-mail to "no" and save, it will not send the email although it shows yes in configuration.

For the date format, it is specified in the include/mixvar.php file at the date variable. It is very easy to modify it and for example remove the time. Google PHP date format and you should easily understand how to do it. To modify source code file be sure you use a dedicated editor such a pspad.com.

LOL Donald, thanks for your support, the observation to Mila is spot on.

Concerning the look and design of this site, feel free to visualize the source of the page and copy the post template. You can easily infer it by looking at the source. You might have to copy also some styles from the source to have it look the same. Let me know if you have problems in doing this.

    Hello Donald,

Not sure what you mean when you say that you installed it on windows XP. This is a server side software.

The way to use it is to transform each html page for a photo in a guestbook. This requires installation of the WCS on your server. Once it is correctly installed, you can login to the admin section, then go to the guestbook manager and create a new guestbook for each html page (photo page) by following the instructions in the guestbook manager.

Feel free to e-mail me if you need further help.

    Best Regards-Andrea

Installed on windows XP. I still don't know how to link it to the page. I have a series of photographs, each with its own html page. How do I point foto 1 to id 1; foto 2 to id 2, etc?

    Hello Dan,

In admin, configuration: the guestbook name should be the name of your guestbook html page. From what you posted it looks like you did not get this one right.

For the image: it is automatically generated by the script. If you have a recent PHP version and the permission of the main folder is correct, you should see the captcha image.

    Best Regards,

    Admin

I just recently purchased your software, I have a stupid question...After the person submits an entry, it leaves them on the "IP Logged" page.... How do I redirect to another page or back to the easy_php_guestbood.html page?

    Posted by AndreaOctober 15, 2008 - 09:47 am
Thorsteinn, so it looks like we have now solved the issue, that was due to the fact that having the script work on a PHP version before 4.3 requires some tweaking.

Ian, yes indeed to use the WCS you have to create each guestbook individually, which requires entering the guestbook URL in the WCS admnistration at the time of guestbook creation. If the script does not meet your expectations or requirements, please contact me by e-mail and we will address the issue.

    hi,
I just downloaded the wcs script and ran into problems.
I followed the instructinos, uploaded the files into myhost/wcs folder and changed permissions.

I then open admin.html or index.html but when I submit I just get a blank page.

    Any ideas?

    Posted by AndreaOctober 08, 2008 - 02:39 pm
Hello Bob, yes you can do it, but not so easily. You have to modify:

    - the javascript code in the guestbook html page
    - the code in the /images/smilies.html page
    - and of course add the new smileys gifs in the images folder

Nothing difficult if you have some basic html skills. Will take some work though.

    Good luck!

Yes, each has its own URL, and on the web pages they are identified as gbid 1, gbid 3, and gbid4, which correspond with the folder names on the server.

    Anything else I could check?

    Posted by AndreaSeptember 12, 2008 - 11:32 am
    Harry, check that:

    - you do not have 2 guestbooks with the same URL

    - each time that you create a guestbook you have to copy IT'S OWN POSTING FORM html from the gustbook manager. Each guestboook has a different posting form, you have to copy-paste it each time for each new guestbook, straight from the guestbook manager.

    Andrea,

The system writes to gb1, gb2, and gb3, and the comments and logs appear to all be stored properly in those files, so it's not a write permissions issue.

For gb1, what happens is no comments are displayed until you enter a new comment. Then they all show up.

For gb2 and gb3, even though there are plenty of messages being held in the posts file, no comments ever show.

    thanks

    Posted by AndreaSeptember 12, 2008 - 06:21 am
Derrick, you might want to periodically manually clean up the session files from the posts folder as with this method they are not deleted automatically. Not a big deal as they are very small files, but in the long run they might take some disk space.

    IT WORKS!

    I'm running 0.55.3 (free)

    $gb=new Guestbook;
    session_save_path("posts") ;
    //$gb->BuildMenus();

    //#######//#######//#######//TASKS START HERE//#######//#######//#######//#######//#######

    _THANKS A BUNCH.

Derrick, which version are you using?

Try to simply put the following line somewhere at the very top of the script:

    session_save_path("posts") ;

    Posted by DerrickSeptember 12, 2008 - 05:47 am
    Hi Andrea,
    Thanks for the quick response.

    the lines:

    $gb=new Guestbook;
    session_start();

do not exist together. though I found several instances of them apart from eachother. Also the following line does not exist in the document at all.

    session_save_path("posts") ;

I used Dreamweaver CS3 to edit

    Posted by AndreaSeptember 12, 2008 - 05:38 am
Derrick, try the same thing I just suggested to Martin. It looks like the sessions expire aech time you do something and this sould be the cause of your problem. Concerning permissions, some windows servers require 775 instead of 777 for the folders.

    Best-Admin

    Posted by AndreaSeptember 12, 2008 - 05:34 am
    Martin,

I think I know the problem, have seen it before. The cause is a misconfiguration of your server. In particular the PHP sessions folder is most likely not allocated correctly.

Try this: open the php_guestbook.php file with a dedicated source code editor like http://www.pspad.com (freeware for windows). Do not use windows notepad.

    Look for the following lines:

    $gb=new Guestbook;
    session_start();

Add the following line in between the two above:

    session_save_path("posts") ;

Try again. Good luck, thanks for posting the test results here.

Hi there, I'm having some trouble with this.
    my guestbook is located here

    http://itheds.com/guestbook/easy_php_guestbook.html

I have kept all of the default settings. The config page will not save my changes and the easy_php_guestbook.html does not post my comments, nor do I see any changes in the posts.txt file.

It sounds like a permissions issue to me, but I changed all of the permissions according to the readme. Any light you could shed on the subject would be very helpful.

Harry, did you remember to grant the guestbook html pages 666 permission? If you did not this explains what you observe now. Check if the permissions of the html guestbook page for gb2 and 3 are the same as gb1.

Hi Andrea. Thanks for your previous help. gb1 now works as expected, but I have a similar problem to Wendy's for gb2 and gb3, except that comments never show. I can enter comments, enter the CAPTCHA, and get returned to the page but comments don't show. I have moderation mode turned on, so I use the control panel to approve all the messages, but they still don't show. I can't tell if this is related to the previous problem or not.

WOW - you were sooo fast with your help! Thank you very much :)

    Posted by AndreaSeptember 10, 2008 - 02:23 pm
Wendy, maybe you are modifying the page and reuploading it. When you do this, of course the page will be "empty" (with no comments). When you make a new post the page is repopulated with the old posts from the flat file database of messages. This is the kind of situation in which posting a new message brings back the previous one(s).

And yes, you can edit the appearance of the posts by going in admin, configuration. Scroll down and search for the posts template field, there is where you can edit the html that controls the appearance of the posts.

Actually, your own system doesn't work right. After entering the CAPTCHA, it goes to a page that says "processing", and then hangs. If you refresh, it goes to a page that says something about your IP address being logged, and then hangs. But if you get back to the guestbook page, and then refresh it, you will see your comment added to the page.

Hi Jonathan, if the problem is a particular post, you can edit manually the posts.txt file to remove the message line involved. I suggest you use a dedicated source code editor such a pspad to do the editing. When you re-upload the file you might have to grant a 666 permission for it to work well again.

    Adam,

If the link is in place, the only reason you can get this is if you made a mistake in naming the html guestbook file in configuration. A common mistake is to put guestbook.html instead of guestbook.htm as guestbook name in configuration.

    Hope this helps.

Melissa, first make sure php is working fine on your server. Then try to use, for the folders, 755 permissions instead of 777 permissions. Those are the 2 most common reasons for the issue you report.

    Hope this helps,

    Best-Admin

Danny, if you did set the main folder permission and gbooks folder permission at 777, try 755 instead. Feel free to e-mail me at the support address specified in the manual. Please consider that I am out of office until august 20, so I cannot check the mail and messages every day.

David, double check that you did not make any mistake in naming the guestbook file in the configuration section. If you have the name slightly wrong posting cannot work. For the html file a 666 permission is enough, 777 is overkill.

Hi ahmed, in include/mixvar.php look for the date variable. You will see that there is a +0 on the line. Correct this to positive or negative offset, for example +3 or -4, as needed. Be sure you use a dedicated source code editor such as pspad to do the job.

Steven, then check that in admin, configuration, the guestbook name is correct. Double check. .htm is different from .html for example. Other than this, it looks like the HTML of the page is correct and the posts are logged in the flat file.

I am having problems getting the posted messages to show up where the posts should be on the site. I think it's a coding issue on my part. I added the "comments start" and "comments end" where I think it should be, but I'm a bit stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And, by the way, this is a fabulous product!

Kevin, no easy way to add another field unless you are familiar with php. Concerning the e-mail setting, once you set it to no, it will not send the e-mail although it will show as yes in admin. And every time you make a change to some other thing in admin you should remember to set it to no before saving, otherwise it will return to yes. I'll try to address this issue in a next release.

    Andrea

I have a web page for Prayer Requests and I am using this guest book to set it up.

Now I need to change a few things and don't want to mess up what I have now by making changes without knowing what I am doing.

I have 3 fields, Prayer Request For, Submitted By, and Prayer Request (message)

Here is the site if you want to fill in a test page to see exactly what I mean.
    http://www.rselby.net/prayer/prayer.htm

Now problem is when a prayer request is posted it Lists the fields in the web page as and I think this Name, Address and Prayer Request.

The Prayer Request I changed but I forgot where I change this one and didn't notice the others were wrong.

Where can the names of these fields on the form be changes so they are shown correctly for my page?

Thanks for the help, great program and the help is even better...

    Have a great day,

    Rick

JV, you don't "add" a script to a page. You upload the script and configure it for using a particular page (built with WST, why not) as a guestbook.

Just download the script and try, feel free to post for advice on configuration.

Mind that if you are using windows hosting on godaddy you might have problems in setting the correct permissions for the script (or any other script that needs to write to a page). Linux godaddy works fine instead.

I am using WebSite Tonight sitebuilder (WST) via GoDaddy. WST allows editing of the HTML source code. I have tried it. Can I simply add a script (for a comments section / guest book) to an individual page? Or am I simplifying this too much?

    Posted by AndreaJune 05, 2008 - 05:37 am
Hi Sam, it means that the posts.txt file is either not created or not written. You probably have a wrong permission of the "posts" folder. It should be 777 or 755 on some hosts. Try both.

I think it just can't send mail because on that host you have to buy a service that allows mail to be sent by a php script. oh well :)

    Posted by AndreaMay 17, 2008 - 06:27 pm
Jill, you can set the maximum number of characters per post in the admin section.

Robert, the mail could be trapped in your spam filter. Try to change the recipient e-mail address and see if you can get it sent to another address, as a check.

Anyway, I follow all of your instructions, upload everything, etc. and everything seems to be working fine for a while. But if I log in to the admin section and change anything at all in the configuration, the whole thing breaks and I can't even log in to the admin page (I can enter the password, but it just takes me to a blank page). Then, I can't do anything except upload the old conf.php file, but ultimately I can't configure the guestbook to work. Can you give me any suggestions? Oh, also, I inserted the guestbook as code on another .htm page. Thanks,

Semele, thanks for your kind words.
Concerning your question, the answer is no, I did not specifically develop a formmail script. However you could easily use the script as a formmail with captcha instead of a as a guestbook with a couple of simple configuration tricks. If you want to know how to do it, send me an e-mail and allow a couple of days for the reply.

    Posted by AndreaMay 12, 2008 - 01:54 pm
Elisabeth, you can style the posts area by modifying the "posts template" in admin, configuration. You can also style the form. An easy way to apply a style already defined in your page to an element of the posts (for example the name or message) is to use SPAN tags in conjuction with a class=style_name declaration. I suggest you google span tags and CSS to find out more about this.

Let me know if you need further tips.

    Posted by AndreaMay 11, 2008 - 12:02 pm
Rick, there is no resubmit time. To introduce a time offset, you can open the include/mixvar.php file and look for the $date line. You will see that n the second part it says "+0 hours". You can modify this to a positive (ex: +3) or negative (ex: -1) time offset. Be sure to use a dedicated source code editor such as pspad (pspad.com, freeware for windows) to edit the source code.

    Best Regards-Admin

The time in the book is off by one hour, how do I change this to the correct time.

And how do I change the time set to resubmit? I noticed on this post, I usually don't have cookies enabled and once I went in to enable them and tried again, it gave me an error until I delete temp internet files. So there must be a setting for the time to resubmit.

It's up and running. little work on the permissions needed, seems with every change I made when I uploaded a the form the permissions defaulted back to 644 instead of staying at 666... very weird... well, take a look:

Asmarino, you should link to us from your guestbook page as explained in the readme file. If you already liked to us, maybe you made a mistake in the guestbook name field in administration. It should contain the exact name of the file you are using as a guestbook.

Andrea, Ok, I've got it sorted for my needs, but only because I know some PHP. I do have some ideas for changes to your process for building pages that would allow you to have multiple {menu} sections seperate from the {comments} section. It's a bit of a paradigm shift, but I think you have most of the hard work done, it just needs some things rearranged. I think this would be a good feature for the next version so that HTML coders can layout their pages the way they want to without having to play in the backend PHP. Email me offline if you would like to pursue this further or see the changes to the source code I made.

Again, thanks for a wonderfull product!!

Mike, not simple as the menus and messages are outputted as a single block.

Ok, I'll start digging through your source code and see how this will play out. I do have a feeling this might be a deal breaker, so I may code something on my own and get back to you.
    Thanks for the assistance!!

How do I get the posts to appear automatically.
Right now they do not appear until someone posts a comment.
Then they can see the comments.
    Thanks

Mike, not simple as the menus and messages are outputted as a single block. However, I have difficulties in understanding how this could ever break a layout. It will simply be a table within another table. And anyway, making so that the menu is not in a table anymore is quite simple. However as things stand you simply cannot move the menu around in the page, this could be done but it would require a good deal of custom coding. You can easily control the appearance of the menus with CSS though.

A very very easy thing to do is to remove the upper menu block and only leave the lower one. However, it seems to me that in the current distribution of the WCS the upper menus are not even present, so you should not have this problem.

Even that will break the layout since the {menu} section will be in the wrong {tr} element of the table (it will be in the {tr} of the last entry). In order for me to have complete control over the page menu, I'd still need a seperate {menu} section that I can chose where it goes. Is this possible?

I do see now where Liz was answered, the WCS will allow us to remove the smiley's -- but will it allow us to control the image size? Length of post, number of images and/or smiley's?
The WCS does not have the smilies as a standard feature. They can be added relatively easily. If you did download the WCS and want to add smilies send me an e-mail and I will provide the relevant information.

Concerning the other questions: you can control the length of the posts by setting a maximum number of characters for posts in each guestbook administration. You cannot control the size or number of images or smilies. This could be custom coded, however it is not supported at the moment.

Hope this answers your questions. If not, please feel free to post again and ask for more details.

Mary, I am not familiar with the ftp utility of dreamweawer, however changing permissions to a file is a standard feature of the FTP protocol and is generally supported by all ftp clients. All the ones I tried had this feature.

Let me know if you need further inputs on the topic.

I just finished installing the enhanced EPHPG at GrassCam.com. I must say this is a very simple way to handle a low churn, simple table of data.
I do have a question though, my pages have the comments listed as tr segments inside a outer table. By looking at this page's source code I see that the page menu will also be inside the comments before and after the entries. Since this will break my table layout, what would it take to seperate the menu into it's own sections? That way I can have the menu section, my table header, the comments section, and then another menu section.
    What would this take?

Concerning you last post that did mess the layout, you did insert a TR tag. These kind of issues can be easily solved by adding the tag to the forbidden words list in the configuration section. On this particular guestbook I prefer to only block a tag when it is really necessary. For instance i frame, script and other such tags are indeed blocked. However I like the idea of leaving some room for creativity for people who know how to use HTML. If I really have a problem I can edit or delete a post or entirely block a tag easily in the admin section.

Let me know if you have further questions or need assistance for your customization.

Interesting. I see that my last post was laid out interstingly due to an inadvertent html segment. The yellow bits should be before the white bits, with a <tr&gr in between.

Again thanks for writing a script that doesn't assume I don't want to just run it on it's own.

Thanks Andrea for your quick answer.
i use the dreamweaver ftp, am i going to have problem there with the permissions?

    Posted by CobusApril 28, 2008 - 02:57 pmPrivate
Yes, PHP 5 is active on both of them.

    Posted by AndreaApril 28, 2008 - 12:53 pm
Cobus, are you sure php is active on the server that does not work? if so, which version of PHP does it run, is it the same as the server that works?

    Posted by CobusApril 28, 2008 - 12:25 pmPrivate
Changing the permissions, is not the solution...

    Posted by AndreaApril 28, 2008 - 12:17 pm
Mary, in most cases you will need to set the permissions. This is usually done easily through your ftp client.

Will the script work as it is or i need to set permission anyway? Because, I dont get the permission bit on the instructions...

    Posted by AndreaApril 28, 2008 - 10:20 am
Cobus, the permission requirements could be different on the two sites. For instance one might require folder permissions 777 and the other 755.

If the site that does not work uses 777 permission for the foders, try 755 instead.

Liz, you can do this by getting the WCS version of the script.
