Thanks for your reply. I was able to get in after using the correct password. I probably will step up to the enhanced version as I would like to stay within the same site.
    Thanks again.

Hedwig, so what happens exactly when you try to access admin?

One thing you can try is to open the include/conf.php file with pspad (or another dedicated source code editor) and configure manually, however not being able to access admin is indeed a strong limitation.

Let me know what happens exactly when you try to access admin. Post a PM with the URL is you wish.

I just installed the free PHP guestbook. When trying to access the admin, it does not accept my password - so the program does not let me in. Please advice. The only thing I would like to change is the redirection after posts are made. I want the user to stay on my site.
    Thanks

    Hi Troy,

Your question was how do I upgrade to the enhanced version while preserving the current setup.

    Here's what you can do:

    - Before you do anything, it is a good idea to make a full backup of your guestbook folder, on your server or locally on your PC

    - Save your current posts template (copy from configuration in admin) in a text file

    - from the enhanced version zip, replace entirely the "include" folder and the php_guestbook.php file on your server. The best way to do this is to rename the current include folder to include_bck, rename the current php_guestbook.php file to php_guestbook_bck.php, upload the new include folder and the new php_guestbook.php file from the enhanced version zip. This way, if you screw up something you can always restore the old folders by renaming them back.

    - grant include/conf.php 666 permission (as you did on the free version install)

    - login to admin, go to configuration, re-set the main variables (admin password, guestbook name and URL, e-mail addresses, posts template) to the correct values. Save configuration

If everything is done correctly, you are now upgraded to the enhanced version while preserving your guestbook html page, previous posts and posts template from your previous free version.

Give it a go and let me know if you run into any problem.

Another question, how can I edit the page that comes up when you don't enter the right verification code? The page just states the IP number and "logged, etc.". I'd like for it to ask to re-enter the correct code. Otherwise, the visitors won't know what to do.

I have the enhanced version and wanted to know:

How to make the entries visible upon loading the guestbook page/form even before entering a new entry. I want my visitors to see the entries even if they decide not to submit an entry. right now, you have to submit an entry in order to refresh the screen and see the existing entries posted.

I'm having difficulties editing the layout of the Verification Page so I was wondering how I can do this?
Or, How can I eliminate the step of the verification page?

Matt, you have my e-mail address. Feel free to e-mail me the full details or make a PM.

Concerning the next and last links, you can entirely customize the header and footer of the pages beyond the first one on each guestbook configuration section. What you see now is simple the default graphics. Feel free to replace it with your own. Look for the "header" and "footer" fields in the guestbook configuration section, this is where you can put in your own html

Okay having issues with the form. I need certain styles setup. you sent me code before and i havent gotten around to implementing it just yet. now i have implemented it and the font style is incorrect and the Name: Email: Date Posted: Message: text is black and i need it white.

Also when a person clicks next or Last it goes to a another page where it has a website comments system banner and we would like the next and last to appear on the same page.

Also we would like comments to be seen constantly and not after a person posts a comment.

    Hello Andrea,

Well, I'm finally up and running (my permissions had to be set to 755) and I've customized the guestbook more in line with the look of the site. You can have a look here: Link Text. I'll definitely be looking into your enhanced versions. Also, as a little note to LoA; I got the same problem as you have mentioned in your last post and I think it was just a case of me naming the guestbook page wrongly on the Configure page. I was putting it in as .html instead of .htm. Hope that helps.

Just one more question Andrea. How can I clear the messages that already appear on the guestbook page?

Thanks for your kind attention, Andrea

hi. I posted before about an error i was getting. I decided to see if I still got the error while using the sample html page provided with the installation.

I have everything needed that is required and followd the instructions completely including setting file permissions.

and i still get this error:

"Please link to the Official Easy PHP Guestbook page in order to use this script. See the readme file licence section for details.
You can avoid linking to us by getting the Enhanced version"

i have not modified the sample html page at all. any ideas why this is happening?

The comment by LoA is actually referencing my website, as he is the coder.

We are still having difficulty with even testing the "free" version of the comments as you told me to do. I'm not sure what exactly is causing the problem. If you'd like I can paste the code in here on the template, or you are welcome to view our system to have a look yourself.

Or we can talk on msn messenger, my email is my contact.

Would love assistance with this to make sure it will work or not, prior to purchase.

I just tried to install this today to work with a custom vbpowerd page in my vbulletin.

i keep my custom pages inside the 'forum' directory and i wanted to keep the guestbook files in their own folder which happens to be above the 'forum' directory. i made sure to check the html code for relative links and change them to absolute. so far i only found that i needed to change one for the php_guestbook.php file.

i entered all the info at the admin configuration page to make sure all is correct. and after getting a few errors at first, i made a little progress and now get an error telling me that i have to have the "powered by" link.

i never removed it however! it is there and i can see it. but when i try to make my first test post, it says that i don't have it and should add it.

here's my page so you can check it out.

Jimbob, this message is not from the script, it is from your hosting server. Try to set the guestbook and posts directories permissions to 755 instead of 777. For the files that have to be writable (see readme file) 666 should still be OK. Just a guess, not sure it will work. If it does not work, contact your hosting provider and ask which permission a directory should have so that a php script can write a file in it.

    Hello Andrea,

Thanks for the quick reply yesterday. I had a look at my FTP application (FileZilla) and found where to set the permissions. Unfortunately, when I try to login to the Admin section I get the following message:

"A file permissions error has occurred running this script.
Please check that the script and the directory that it's in are only writable by the site administrator.
If this error persists, please contact the server administrator."

I was able to login once yesterday (my first try) but never since and I've no idea why. I've checked and re-checked all the files that need permissions set (mainfolder, posts, include/conf.php, easy_php_guestbook.html). The php_guestbook.php file is set to 644. I've tried this file set to 777 but it doesn't make any difference. Any ideas?

    Thanks for your time, Andrea

    Hi Fred
    1) Is it possible to enable the post moderation just in some pages? For instance, if I want to have, let's say, a 'main guestbook' with comments moderation and a few others, in several sections of my site, with this function disabled - can I do it?
    Yes you can do that
    2) Is it possible to add a user URL field in the form? How?
Not easily. We can do it for you for a symbolic fee
    3) Can I make a defaut of "make private" funtion for e-mail adresses, in order that the user's adress will never be shown?
Yes, absolutely. You can easily completely block the display of e-mail in the posts, while still retaining the info in the admin section for you to view.

Can I turn off the "are you a human" thing, so it doesn't have to continually verify that you are a human?

    Posted by LegionApril 09, 2008 - 10:22 pmlegion-of-angels@hotmail.com
    Alright

    Final Question I believe.

Can I remove the buttons then with a simple option in the Admin CP of this?

If not, what do I have to do to remove them, since I will not want HTML being posted in the comments.

    Posted by AndreaApril 09, 2008 - 07:08 pm
Legion, The icons are in the template of the free version and the enhanced version, this is why you find them around in other people installations. They work by inserting html code in the page. So if you do not want html, you cannot use them. BBcode is nice and we might indeed implement this in the future. Not supported at the moment though.

You can indeed block html by using the badwords list, most tags are banned by default in our distributions anyway.

My suggestion is to download the free version and try to add posting to a page, to see if this works for you. If it works, then get the WCS.

    Posted by LegionApril 09, 2008 - 06:07 pmlegion-of-angels@hotmail.com
One last thing on these icons here.

vBulletin forums use BB code to convert HTML into BB code so that you can do:

    Bold, Italic, Underline, etc, etc.

Have you ever thought of trying to integrate this product with vBulletin? You might be able to sell this to them as well, if you could convert your buttons to do bb code rather than HTML which is what it looks like they are.

    Posted by LegionApril 09, 2008 - 06:03 pmlegion-of--angels@hotmail.com
    Hello,

I'm betting if we use this:

    http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1486991#post1486991

The code that member suggested, I bet it will work with your product or script here.

I'm confused on the icons. Your saying they don't come with this? Do they come with any of the versions, because it seems that in a lot of the examples of the other uses they have the buttons. Very good on the png's, and I can make the images, so I wouldn't need them made for me, I would just want them on my product.

IT does depend though, I don't want this text box I'm typing in now to allow HTML. Or I run the risk of having normal members or any strangers posting html or broken html and it could ruin the system. So I can't allow html in these things and if those buttons are html code, then we are going to forget the button options and just go basic.

WOOHOO!! That is exactly what I meant and exactly what I wanted to do. It works perfectly to, where the Tetris Page has comments on Tetris and the other pages have comments on there respective games.

weet. Still haven't tested the News Archive yet, will still get to that. Let me know on the icons please and we'll go from there.

    Thanks

    Posted by AndreaApril 09, 2008 - 05:05 pm
    Legion,

    - The icons: the icons are not included as a feature of the WCS posting form automatically generated by the guestbook manager in administration. However we could probably do some custom work to add them for you, it is not a big deal. You would be indeed able to use any image you like, gif, jpg, png. It's just a matter of changing the images adresses in the code.

The styling: if you know how to use styles, you can do everything. If the v-bulletin styles are in a file, you can import the CSS easily. This is only a part of the game: you then have to use the styles in the page. So in short: if you can build an html page that uses the v-bulletin stlyles, you can then indeed plugin the wcs. These are 2 distinct problems though.

Concerning the games pages, have a look here: Online games. The comnments in all the games pages are managed with the WCS. Sample page: Tetris. Not sure if this is the kind of thing you had in mind. Keep me posted!

Thank you so much for your prompt response.

I didn't hear your answer on the buttons above. I seen in the examples you have that someone changed the images, but can I also change there file type to PNG?

I am concerned about the styling, As I see you use orange headers with an orange bg, I wonder if we can add a code to pull the style information from the templates of vbulletin. I bet we can, so not a big deal here. Even if we can't I've seen others use this and alter there bg's to fit with there page, so that might be good enough. As long as we have some customization options thats good.

Working on the News Archive is good, but not necessary. I will test that and get back to you.

The Games section though will all be individual pages, created by me, and I have to have that work as it's the main reason I found this place or the reason I'm looking for this.

To make completely clear though, if I add the comment script to each individual page with the games on them, it will act like independent comment sections and not ONE BIG ONE that's interconnected. Right? Because I want individual comment sections, NOT interconnection or if I post saying "this game is lame" I want it only on the lone page I put that on, not on every single page with the comment script.

I hope you understand what I was saying there.

Please let me know, very excited to have found this.

    Posted by AndreaApril 09, 2008 - 01:23 pm
Legion, thanks for your interest in the WCS. So let's see:

    - you can add comments to any html page on your website. However, if the html page is itself dynamically generated by another script (not sure this is the case of your pages in the newsarchive section) from a database for example, this could work or not, depending on how the other script works.

So if your pages are created manually by yourself, it will work. If the pages are created by a script, it could work or not. You should test this. May I suggest you download the free version and try it on one of your pages, this should give the answer.

So coming to your second post, I am not sure at all that this will work on pages generated by v-bulletin. If a user changes his style preferences and v-bulleting rebuilds the page, this could well interact negatively with the WCS. Again, may I suggest you try this with the free version. The free version will work on a single page instead of many, however the mechanism is very similar, so if you can have the free version work on one of your pages, and if this resists to v-bulletin settings changes, the WCS should work aswell.

Concerning the 'remember me' function, this is not a feature currently supported by the script. So definitely no, you will not have this with the wcs.

If you need more info feel free to post again or send me an e-mail if you prefer.

    Posted by LegionApril 09, 2008 - 11:09 amlegion-of-angels@hotmail.com
    One final question.

On the section with the Flash Games like I linked you to, the forum itself has 11 different styles.

I need to make sure the general layout and font/colors all change if a user changes the style on our vbulletin.

    Can that be done?

    Hello,

I'm very interested in your $20 full Comment System, but I have some questions.

    Here is my website:

    http://www.legionofangels.net

Now I don't actually want to use the product on the website main page, i want to use it in conjunction with:

    http://www.legionofangels.net/newsarchive/

The reason for this is because Movable Type does not allow comments on the main entries, but only on the archived entries. So i need to make sure it's usable on all the entries pages of that News Archive, can that be done?

I'd also like to do it for a section that I haven't created yet on my vBulletin Forum:

    http://www.legionofangels.net/forum/

What I am going to do is add custom pages to my forum such as this:

    http://www.legionofangels.net/forum/loaflash.php

and I want to put your comment system on everyone of those pages. Can that be done?

Final question is in regards to the 7 buttons above the text box. I have completely redone almost every image on the vBulletin forum product. I use PNG's mainly instead of gifs. Can I adjust or change those buttons to PNG and upload my own button images?

Please respond when you can so we can purchase if this meets our functionality.

    Thanks,

    Legion

I just have one problem I don't know how to fix: how can I include more fields in the guestbook form? I would like to put an URL field too, but I don't know how to do. Can you help me?

    Valerie,

Concerning the first point, no, I don't understand what you mean. Basically, by default (for example if you use the provided html page), the form and comments are in the same page. After you submit a comment, of course you still see the posting form AND the posted comment.

Concerning the second point, make a PM with your guestbook URL and I will tell you where to look for this.

Thanks for the quick answer back. I changed my mind though. How do I have both the "add comment" area and the already posted comments on the same page initially. As it is now when I call "easy_php_guestbook.php" it just has the "add comment" area. After I submit the comment it shows the "add comment" area AND the posted comments. Does it make sense what I'm trying to say?

One other thing...what file do I modify to change the colors and stuff for the turing test? I couldn't figure it out. Thanks for your help.

    Posted by AndreaApril 06, 2008 - 12:11 am
Valerie, if the page with the form is not in the guestbook folder (which is fine), the ACTION of the posting form should point to the full URL of the php_guestbook.php file, you have to edit this yourself when you copy the html for the form for the readme file. Conversely, the page where the messages end up should be located in the guestbook folder

    Posted by AndreaApril 06, 2008 - 12:05 am
    Valerie,

put the posting form in one page. In the other page, only copy the lower part of the posting form, from the COMMENTS START tag to the end, where you want the messages to appear on this page.

The guestbook name and URL in configuration should be the ones of the page where the messages actually end up.

If you need more help feel free to post again.

Hello First, let me say that this is the best, guestbook I have found I really like it. I have a problem - after I have entered the "I am human" code, I get an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error. When I open the guestbook again, the message is posted and I get an email, looks like everything is working. It tries to redirect to display the .../php_guestbook.php page, but the page doesn't display. I've tried changing the security between 777 and 755.

Hi! First, I really like this guestbook, it is a fantastic and easy tool. But I do have one problem - after I have entered the "I am human" code, I get an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error. When I open the guestbook again, the message is posted and I get an email, so everything else seem to work. Assume I missed something?

    Posted by AndreaMarch 23, 2008 - 12:14 pm
John, if you scroll down around page 4 and look for the posts from Robin, you will see how Robin solved the issue.
    Here is the relevant quote:
I found a simple fix that works. I set up a email account on the server the guestbook/website is on. Not really a solution per se, because I can't send to other domains. But at least it solves my immediate problem.
However since you are now the second person coming out with this, I will definitely look into adding a "send through smtp" feature. This is already on my todo list. However since the list is quite 'busy', this might take a little while, sorry about that.

    Posted by AndreaMarch 23, 2008 - 09:57 am
John, there might be a couple of reasons for this to happen:

    - the messages are sent but blocked by your provider/spam filetr. To check for this try setting a different e-mail address at a different provider and see if this now works

    - your host does not support localhost as e-mail sending method. I've seen this only once up to now, basicall all providers support localhost. To check for this contact your hosting provider and enquire about this specific issue: can a php script send an e-mail with the localhost method under your configuration?

    Keep me posted!

Herman, Brandon is right. Another thing you might want to check: do the messages that you post show in the edit/delete section? if so, it is definitely a problem of permission for the html guestbook file, set it to 666. If not, then you might have an additional permission problem for the posts folder.

Feel free to post again if this info does not solve your issues.

    Bryan,

I think in every webmaster career comes a time when you realise that your basic and maybe free hosting is not enough anymore. At a certain moment you start needing/wanting dynamic features that can only obrained with cgi or php scripts. Maybe the time has come for you to seek a webhost that supports scripting languages.

If you send me an e-mail I can point you to an extremely cheap yet full featured linux hosting service. This is the one I use for this site. Just drop me a line or a PM and I'll be back to you by e-mail.

The alternative that you have is to get an 'hosted' guestbook service. However my experience is that you run the risk of loosing your pages if the service goes out of business. Not so if you host and manage your own script on your own server.

Feel free to contact me at any time for any tips or suggestions.

Bryan, the server offers to download the page instead of executing the code. This means tha your server is not configured to run PHP scripts at the moment. I suggest you contact your web host to enquire on how to turn on PHP for your account.

    Posted by AndreaMarch 22, 2008 - 01:16 pm

The most likely reason for this is that the main folder containing the guestbook files and folders does not have a 777 (755 on some systems) permission.

NFisher, your server has a very rare and restrictive configuration option that is severly affecting your ability to run most common php scripts. The eval statement is a syntactic construct in PHP widely used by most developers, including myself. Your configuration of PHP on your server is such that eval statements are forbidden and give an error.

You have 2 options. The best one is to contact your provider and ask to change the PHP configuration so that eval statements are allowed. If your provider is not 'bulk', they will do this for you.

The other option is that we can rewite some portions of the script to make it compatible with your configuration. However this can hardly be done for free as it is a significant effort.

Feel free to post again or send me an e-mail if you have any additional question.

    Best Regards-Admin

I install and chmod the files successfully. I log in with default password, but then when I go to the configure section of the admin panel, it gives this error:

Fatal error: SUHOSIN - Use of eval is forbidden by configuration in /home/sprelig/public_html/gb/php_guestbook.php(349) : eval()'d code on line 349

    Posted by AndreaMarch 21, 2008 - 02:21 pm
Dear Arthur, it may be a permission problem. After copying the files, did you checked again all the permissions? Look in the posts below and download the php test file. Do you also have an error if you upload this file (unzipped of course) and visit it with your browser? This is a very good tool to check for general PHP issues in a particular folder/subdomain, that could be linked to PHP being active/available in some subdomains/folders only or to permission problems. For example in my own host, when I specify a new subdomain I have the option to turn php on or off for this particular subdomain only.

Test with the test file, check the permissions and let me know.

    Arthur,

Honestly it is difficult for me to know what you are doing exactly. Here what I suggest:

    - delete ALL the scripts files and folders. Let's start over.

    - inside public_html, create a new folder called gb

    - grant the gb folder 777 permission (this has to be 755 on some servers. Start with 777. If it does not work, try 755.

    - upload all the files to the gb folder

    - grant the following permissions:
    easy_php_guestbook.html: 666
    include/conf.php: 666
posts folder: 777 or 755, as required/allowed by your server.

    - ogin to admin.html with the default password. If you get an error at this stage, this could be due to the 777/755 thing. If you have an error with 777, try again with 755 as permission for the gb folder.

    - in admin/configure, ONLY change the guestook URL to: http://yourdomain.com/gb/easy_php_guestbook.html

where yourdomain.com is your own domain name.

    - go to easy_php_guestbook.html with the browser and try to post.

    Let me know.

    Posted by AndreaMarch 21, 2008 - 11:33 am
    Brandon,

Are you working on your PC or on your server? If the servers wants you to download the file instead of executing it it means that php is not active on the server.

Try this: download this fille php test file, unzip and upload to your guestbook directory and try to visit it in your browser. Do you get the same (prompt for download)? If so, it definitely means that PHP is not working on the server. You have to turn it on yourself or enquire to your provider on how to do it.

    Posted by AndreaMarch 21, 2008 - 11:22 am
Arthur, I tested your install, it is not working properly. Either it is misconfigured or there is some other problem, such as wrong permissions for example.

If you reset the password to the default one I can have a look at your configuration in the admin section. Concerning the permissions, I cannot check this from there myself. Did you have any problem at time of granting the permissions to the files, as specified on the readme file? is the guestbook.html page writable? Did you put guestbook.html as value for the guestbook name in admin?

    Keep me posted,

Hi Arthur, thanks for enquiring about the software. What do you mean by "see the comment and other comments"? I am not sure I understand what you mean. Both in the free version and in the enhanced version the visitors can see all the comments (posts) of the other visitors.

In the enhanced version the comments can be made private by the poster (as you did for the e-mail in your own post, but for the message field). Private comments can be seen by admin only. This is not possible in the free version where all comments are public, for all to see. In the free version, only the e-mail can made private, not the message.

Anyway, by default the comments are public, every visitor can see them.

You can have a look at the examples of installations, the links at the top of this page, to the right of the posting form. Most of those are done with the free version.

I hope this answers your question, otherwise please feel free to ask for more details.

is it possible in the free version that the guest can also see the comment and other comments? i've been reading about the differences between free one with extended one, but it only stated that in extended one we can choose pagination, but doesnt state about whether the free one can show other comments.

    Ryan,
I was wondering if you will make modifications to your exsisting code for us.

    Sure I will

#1) Now the way I see it there are 3 fields, Name, e-mail, & message. Instead of an "e-mail" field we want to have a drop down menu that will have 2 options. #1) "male" #2) "female". Can we do that?

    Yes, absolutely

#2) I like the setup you have with the orange & yellow example on your site and want to use that same format.

    No problem

The other thing we would like to add is if the client chooses option #1) "male" the posting will be blue and grey instead of orange and yellow;and if they choose option #2) "female" the posting will be pink and grey instead of orange and yellow. Basically it will specify male and female entries using blue for men entries and pink for women entries.

While the other options you ask about are straightforward to implement, this one can indeed be done however it requires a certain amount of custom coding

#3) Just want to make sure I understand how this works.. This is created using PHP and SQL? So this will create html that we can past into our site?

Yes, for each guestbook you create (that is for each existing page you add comments to), in the guestbook manager section you will be provided with a code for the posting form, tha I can customize according to your specifications, that you will have to paste in the html page you wish visitors to comment on.

#4) Can we create an unlimed number of guestbooks to put on different pages in our site??

    Sure you can

Thank you and look forward to your response.

You are most welcome. I will now send you an e-mail so that we can exchange information directly.

    Best Regards,

    Admin

    Robin

Not sending through localhost anymore? This is ridiculous, maybe it's time to change provider?

Unfortunately at the moment sending through smtp is not supported as basically all hosts support localhost nowadays. Actually this is the first time I hear about such a problem.

I will look into this though, I guess adding a 'send through smtp' should be simple enough. I have now added this to the todo list.

    Stay tuned!

I've just discovered that as of last night, my host is no longer allowing the use of "localhost" as the mail host. Is there a way I can change it to point directly to my smtp sever?

    Andrea:
The guestbook is terrific! Your support through all my questions and little trials has been nothing short of superb! It is now working exactly as I want it!

I purchased another system for $67 and I still have no idea how to get it going. Unfortunately, I can't even raise the owner to even respond to my "tickets", never mind provide any support. I think I've kissed that money goodbye.

Fortunately, I found you and PHP Guestbook! I highly recommend this product to anyone who's looking for a great Web 2.0 product!

    Brandon,

You don't need to edit anything manually.
    - Upload the files to a folder
    - Check permissions (see the readme file)
    - login to admin and configure the guestbook URL, file name and review the other settings.

I suggest you read the install section in the readme file, the process is explained in detail there.

Feel free to post any other question or issue you might have.

Ruby, I sent you an e-mail. In short, if you get the error with the test file it means that you are having a general problem with php in the folder you are using.
If the permssion of the folder is 777, try changing it to 755. Then try again with the test file. Reload if you visited recently.

    Ruby,

    - does your server supports php
    - is php active in the directory you are using for the installation

Try do download this file, unzip, upload the the guestbook folder, visit in your browser. If you still have an error it means that you are having a general problem with php.

Also, make a private message with your URL install, I will have a look.

I'm wondering if I can make my guestbook just appear at the bottom of the pages of my website. I don't want my readers to have to go to a separate page.

I'm waiting for the email that will give me the download link and thought I'd just make this enquiry.

Ian, I am not sure I undertand what you are talking about. $messp sounds related to the old free version, which version are you using? Did you possibly mixed up stuff between the old free version and the current one? If you post your URL, I will have a look. Make it a private message if you wish.

Thanks for your reply. I have left 127.0.0.1 and localhost in the list. Now I have the email working, I have tried to ammend the message to include the IP and text. I got the IP working but text shows blank. I tried $messp & $mess_a. Does the comment data get deleted if the message id rejected are am I using the wrong variable? Is there any variable to tell me if the failure was IP or text?

    Posted by AndreaMarch 03, 2008 - 02:44 pmme@here.com
Ian, the users might have been rejected because they tried to post twice in short period of time without reloading the captcha page. If you are in doubt about the IPs, try this: in the banned IPs in admin, delete the current enries, put this value: "222222222", including the quotes, and save. This way you will be sure that no IP will ever be blocked. Don't leave the banned IP field blank otherwise all postings might be blocked.

Concerning the e-mail, glad to hear you have solved the issue and the script was behaving :)
You are most welcome to post a followup on these topics and/or any other issue or question related to the software.

I have installed the guestbook and it passes my tests. Some users have reported being rejected, I think because of IP. I cannot see anything relavent in the logs so I am trying to switch on email reporting. It does not seem to work, again no pointers in the logs. I do not know what method emails are sent. Could it be a PHP function that my host has switched off? Can the script run SMTP, I have done this with other (non-php) scripts.

I'd like to try out your PHP Guestbook script, but can't get the download page to work. I've linked through to your Free script download to give it a test before purchasing the WCS version, but when I fill out the form and click "Get Download" -- I'm taken to a blank page, and no email ever arrives with a link. I'm on Mac and tried Safari and Firefox. What's the deal?

    New free version released

We have released a new free version, that incorporates some of the features of the enhanced version. In particular, the configuration of the script can now performed directly online, in the admin section. Editing of the php file not needed anymore.

Upgrade instructions are provided in the zip. If you are upgrading READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. The flat file format and html for the form have changed, so you really need to read the instructions to upgrade, unless you start over in a new folder, and simply link to the old guestbook from the new one. Probably one of the simplest way to upgrade, anyway.

Feel free to post if you need help in the process.

    Enjoy!

Perhaps it would be better if the default for the PHP GuestBook was to record location for guests, rather than emails? If emails are left public they are vulnerable to spambots. Anyway, a guestbook with messages which visibily come from all over the world is more exciting!

Julie, I am so glad to see you back here with a new website, I am proud of you!

Concerning the error message, you probably put a wrong value in the guestbook name field, in the top variables of the script. It is typical to put "yourpage.html" instead of "yourpage.htm" for example.

Let me know if this does not solve your issue.

Now that you have a professional website, time to consider the enhanced version of the scrip

I'm on the faculty of a major computer-centric university, and although I teach humanities, I do 'dabble' in site development.

For months a student group and I have been stuggling to create a site comments routine using 'home grown' and purchased/'trial' programs.

We happened on WCS and cannot believe how well it works, the tech support we've received and features/values hidden within the program itself.

Skip the 'trial'... Get the new version... You won't be disappointed. The price is a 'steal', the quality/tech-support amazing...and you'll save yourself the hundreds of wasted hours I/we spent trying to build what's already available!

And of course, have fun and share your scores!

The new Website Comments System is tested, working and ready for release. This will allow you to setup unlimited guestbooks, to have visitors comment on each and any html page on your website. Great for photogalleries (let users comment on each photo), collections of articles (let users comment on each article), collection of movies, games etc...

We are in the process of writing the software manual. Release expected within the next few days.

In the meanwhile, all those donating for the guestbook enhanced version will have a free upgrade to the WCS as soon as it is released (see home). This offer holds until the WCS is released. After that, the WCS will have a different, higher donation requirement than the Guestbook enhanced version.

    Stay tuned for developments!

Josh, you can turn image verification off by setting the corresponding variable at the top of the script. In the php_guestbook.php file look at the top variables, there is one called "enable image verification" and also a comment that explains how to turn it off.

However, it is a very bad idea to do so. You will be an easy target for spammers, your guestbook will become full of junk in no time. I very warmly discourage you to do this, on the basis of a long time experience.

I noticed in the php file (free version, line 49) where you offer an alternative formatting for message posts, the variable names are not up-to-date: e.g. name instead of namep. Also, line 431, the comments suggests changing $post to alter guestbook appearance, instead of $p_template.

    Hi Andrea,

I got the Enhanced version working all right after some tinkering but immediately stumbled upon one of the limitations:

I am using the Guestbook againt a black background, so the text won't show. I have now manually manipulated the html code somehow but it would be really neat of that could be built into the configurator. Should ot be too much of a problem for you....

In fact you have changed colors in your own form above...

Preferably setting so that color, font and size can be adjusted...

    Thanks, Guus

To use the guestbook on a page you just have to copy and paste a little html code in the page. You surely can do that with frontpage. On the server side you need a web host with php.

Julie, a moment comes in most webmasters evolution in which one realizes that the free hosting that he's getting is not enough anymore. Maybe this moment has come for you. If you want an interactive web site I warmly suggest you make "the jump": get your own domain name and get a serious hosting. There are excellent, full featured hosting services for like 3$ per month, that will allow you to really unleash your creativity by installing all sorts of scripts that will add interactivity to your site. If you want some suggestions, just ask and I will send you an e-mail with my favorite providers.

Unfortunately javascript is not enough to build a guestbook. A server side thing is needed.

Booooo Hooooo... My server doesnt accept php... only client sided scripts like javascript...
Do I have any other possibilities at this point? I love your guestbook and really want to use it! :(
Is it possible to have a guest book made in javascript??
Cheers and thank you so muc for helping me investigate the problem...

    Hi Julie,

I had a look at your installation. It looks like your server does not support php at the moment. With some providers, you can activate php in your control panel, other providers simply do not offer php.

I suggest you speak again to videotron and ask the following question: can I activate PHP on my server and how.

Once php is active you will be able to use the software.

Best luck and keep me posted,

    Admin

The page when I finished it yesterday looked great when I tested it in my browser, whereas now that Ive uploaded it, its showing text for the icons (bold etc for when people write messages). The main problem I seem to have is that I need to create a sub directory (that Ive called PHP/) because when I FTP into my site, it only shows the URL (pages.videotron.com), and not my actual directory (/alchimie/). I can give the permissions to the /PHP/ subdirectory, but then it gives me the message Post not allowed bla bla...
Ok, Im babbling... I REALLY want to use your system, I love that its on my site (address : pages.videotron.com/alchimie) as opposed to on another site... Where Ive put it (sub directory : ages.videotron.com/alchimie/PHP/testimonials-temoignages.html)
I have spoken with the Videotron (cable internet w 5MB web space) company and they assure me that there are no limitations (although he wasnt sure what chmod was, lol) - but they offer no technical service so not sure the person could really answer the question in the first place...
The Canoe site (which is the Videotron's members page where people put blogs etc) offers one but its a cgi and its absolutely not customizable (ugly!!!). the addy they give for that is Livre des invités

I am more than willing to give you my ftp info if that further helps...

    Posted by AndreaFebruary 14, 2008 - 02:47 pmme@here.com
    Julie,

Please send me the URL of your guestbook so that I can have a look. Also you could let me know which is your webhosting service and the kind of plan you subscribed, so that I can look at the PHP specifications for this? You can make a private message with this info if you wish.

Anyway, it very much sounds like your server does not support php. Have a look at your provider website to see whether php is supported for your hosting plan. You need php on the server to have this script running.

    Best-Andrea

    Posted by JulieFebruary 14, 2008 - 01:21 pmjulie-indigo@videotron.ca
Hmmm.. Ok, can give them permissions, they are accepted, but then it gives me this message :
The requested method POST is not allowed for the URL /alchimie/PHP/php_guestbook.php.
Does this mean its my web host that doesnt allow it?
    Thank u!

    hi!!
i want to know that how to develop this type of online help for our customers.

    Posted by AndreaFebruary 13, 2008 - 12:06 pmme@here.com
Julie, nevermind about the gbook_log, it will be created by the script. The important bit is that the folder containing the guestbook script and guestbook file must have a write permission by all. You must set it on your server, not on your PC. You can do it through the ftp client you use to upload the files, or in your website control panel if you use that to upload the files. You need to assign 777 permission to this folder. On some windows host this is not allowed, and a 755 permission should be OK in this case.

Feel free to post again if you have issues or questions!

    Hello!
Working on installing the free guest book onto my site but have noticed that the zipped file I downloaded doesnt have a file called gbook_log.txt. How can I possibly give it write permission if I dont have it? :)
Never done the write permissions before, so one question : can I do it straight from my windows xp start up menu or do I have to do that on the host side of my site?
    Thank you!!

Steve, try 755 permission for your guestbook directory. Do you see the captcha image with the number on the verification page or is this missing?

    Posted by eugeneFebruary 12, 2008 - 06:09 pmPrivate
I want to change how the $log_file looks when its sent to the administrator. I don't like the tags (i.e. name : eugene) and would like to change that. I am assuming its the post-array

    ($create_post_array = '$post_array = array ("Name" => $name, "Email Address" => $email, "My Comments" => $message, "date" => $date, "post_id" => $post_id, "ip_addr" => $ip_addr, "show_email" => $show_email, "show_message" => $show_message, "approved" => $approved);';

where I successfully made some changes, but get weird results when I tried to remove things. My php is not great so anyone feel generous?

    Posted by Steve RedshawFebruary 12, 2008 - 06:09 pmsr@steveredshaw.idps.co.uk
me again I have edited php files and uploaded again

I now get a repeated verification page and cannot get past that

    I have tried to set the permissions on my test guestbook directory, however I get this from my server;

Unable to execute site command chmod 0777 /htdocs/guest_book. Note that the CHMOD command is only available on Unix FTP servers, not on Windows FTP servers.

could this be the problem? if so then it may mean I cannot set up the guestbook for my web site?

steve, please send the URL of your installation either by e-mail or with a private message. Did you configure the gbook_name variable correctly in the last php_guestbook.php file I sent you? Do you have a link back to us in your guestbook page? Absence of link back in the free version causes nasty errors

    Posted by AndreaFebruary 12, 2008 - 05:58 pmme@here.com
To all those who downloaded the script in the last few hours: we did put up an updated free version a few hour ago. This contained a bug whereby the message field gives an error. To solve the issue please download the file again, this was fixed in the last release that was uploaded a few minutes ago.

The release of a multipage website comments system is approaching. The beta testing is underway and I should say it's looking good! First release expected before the end of this month.
We plan to release the software at special conditions for a short period (1-2 weeks, to be established) after release and then set to the final cost.
The software is tested and working on linux servers. If you want to be a beta tester for WINDOWS, drop us an e-mail or private message with some details and we will evaluate your application.

    Stay tuned!!

For those who asked, a full fledged website comments system is now under development. It will allow to control an unlimited number of html pages comments from a single, centralized script. Basically all the features customization options currently available in the enhanced version, will be available for each and any page of your website. The first release is expected in about a month.

    Posted by AndreaJanuary 29, 2008 - 08:25 amme@here.com
    Hi Dennis,

I suggest you install inside a folder, not top level. This is because the top level folder cannot be given the right permissions.

Move all files and folder to a folder, grant this folder 777 permission, grant the posts folder 777 permission and then grant 666 permission to the html file and the include/conf.php file and you will be OK.

If you really need to install top level it can be done but it is more complicated.

Concerning the width, if you mean the width of the guestbook table, of course you can customize by modifying the html of the provided template (the easy_php_guestbook.html file) or the posts template in the admin section. Feel free to send me an e-mail with more details if you need some help on this.

    Let me know.

    Hi Ian,

It sounds very much like a permission problem. Concerning the image, if GD is working for sure, the only other thing I can think of is that the folder containing the files has a permission problem (the script cannot write files in this folder). Did the script created a file called posts.txt in this folder? It should have done that. Does the html file still contains the link to our official page? The absence of a link back has been reported to cause nasty issues aswell.

    Let me know.

Also I cannot see the verification image so I have switched it off for now. GD is installed because it is working in another app.

I've got to say, this is absolutely the best guestbook ever! I've had mine up and running, thanks to Andrea and her over-the-top support, for almost a week. With other guestbooks, the site would have bombarded with spam in just this short time. But I have not gotten one spam message in it.

Did I mention that support is above and beyond what you would ever expect? I had problems, not because of the the guestbook software, but because of my server, but Andrea was there for me and got me up and running in no time.

Excellent guestbook. Thank you for all your hard work!

Something I'd like to see in the future ..a way to cloak the email addresses that are chosen to be public in the comments. That would be great.

    Eva Marie,

You are right about the buttons. This is a part of the project that need to be addressed to make it more intuitive to use. Most visitors deal well with them though. Actually many users of this software choose to install without the buttons. In the documentation we provide a simple html for the form that allows to do just that.

Not sure what you mean about the space for a link to an URL.

    Best-Admin

    Posted by Eva MarieJanuary 14, 2008 - 01:12 amem@dreempoodles.com
I'm not sure some users would be able to realize how the buttons work. Other than that, this does look fairly easy. I don't know if I would offer the html buttons though.
Can there just be a space for a link to a url?
I will be back to get the enhanced version..

There is no trial period. However if you download the software and are unable to get it working on your server, we will help you out for installation. If for any reason we are unable to get it working on your server (never happened until now) you get the donation back. So you are not really risking much here.

    Debra,

In reply to your last e-mail, the date format is stored in the December 14, 2007 - 10:12 am variable. This is in the top variables of the php_guestbook.php file. Try this:

    December 14, 2007 - 10:12 am=date('F d, Y - h:i a');

    You can remove this part: " - h:i a" if you do not want the hour of the post to be displayed. Beware: do not delete the final ');

    Debra,

It looks like you or your webmaster made some significant changes on how the posts are shown. Namely, the Andrea, and me@here.com variables or the corresponding lang variables were somehow manipulated. This is causing the problem you report.

My suggestion is to make a little test: start over from the original distro and make a test guestbook installation somewhere on your site, by using the provided template html file. Make a post there: you should get a correct e-mail with full posts detail. Then start from there to rebuild your guestbook and monitor the e-mails you get.

Basically on editing the php_guestbook.php file you screwed up something somewhere that is causing the problem. Repeat the installation and monitor the effects of each change you do on the e-mail message and you will find out what you did wrong.

    Debra,

Can you post the url of your guestbook here. You can make the message private if you do not want to show the address to everybody. Also, what is the subject of the e-mail you get and what is the exact text you get in the e-mail body?

Everything is working fine EXCEPT that the email message that I receive does not contain the contents of the posted message. How do I fix this? Thanks

Wub, I have answered your e-mail, did you get my reply? In short, permissions are usually set with the same ftp program you use to upload the files on your server.

Do you get any particular error message when you try to login in the admin section? What happens after pressing the login button?

Feel free to e-mail me or, if you prefer, post here if you have further issues.

Can someone help? I am unable to log into the admin.
I've tried typing pass but it still would not go in. Is there something I am doing wrong? I believe it could be the write permission stuff. But how is this done on windows? thanks.

    New enhanced version released!!
Posters can now decide to make the e-mail and/or message private. Private items can be seen by the site administrator only.

    Enjoy!

    Next release coming soon!

A version with the possibility to make the e-mail and/or the message private (visible to the admin only) is around the corner. The last tests are underway, should be released within a week or so. Stay tuned!

    e,

I'd like to have a look at your website, maybe it could be an interesting "case study" for the multipage version. Can you send me an e-mail with the address? If you go to the main guestbook page and follow one of the paypal links, you will see my e-mail address at the top of the page.

Andrea, yes, i did mean a version that supports multiple guestbooks - i run a site with 100+ article pages and 240+ picture pages, in two languages, and id like to have a guestbook on each page so that visitors' comments would be relevant to what they see/read, rather than one central guestbook page.
I can certainly wait till next year

    New enhanced version released!!!

If you have contributed a donation in the past, send me an e-mail and you will get the latest enhanced version at no charge.

    All snapshots

e, if you mean a version that supports multiple guestbooks with a single script, I anticipate it might take a while. I don't see this coming within this year I am afraid. It will mostl likely come at some time near the beginning of 2008.

If instead you mean pagination (break down the posts in multiple pages instead of a single page) it is already available in the enhanced version.

The next feature coming is the configuration of the variables in the admin section instead of in a text file. Here's what the new admin section home page looks like. This will be available within a week or so in the enhanced version

is it possible to get some info on the arrival of the multi-page version? thanks.

Taivo, many thankk for your post. The hide e-mail feature might end up in the free version aswell, will take a bit longer though. The e-mail checker

    Posted by Taivo04:35, 01 12 2007chazychaz@linkinpark.ee
I would like to mention one little thing. I assume, when someone doesn't want to show his e-mail address, then the e-mail field should be entirely hidden, not just a blank. OK. That comes only along as a new features only in enhanced version. I advise you to add some e-mail checker also, because "aaaaaa" isn't an e-mail.

Another thing. My hostserver doesn't like CAPTCHA (or sessions or something like that, I'm not sure). Is there any other alternative for the spam protection, like text-number verification or is there anything like that, which doesn't need any specific requirements and are simple to use in servers with limited options?

    New features coming soon!
We are working on several improvements, mainly for the enhanced version.

The configuration of most variables such as number of posts per page, reserved name, admin e-mail, send warning e-mains (yes/no) etcetera will be available in the admin section instead of needing the editing of the config file by hand as it is now. This means much more control of the guestbook features and appearance directly from the website

    Posted by Andrea10:51, 30 11 2007me@here.com
    Taivo,

The e-mail field can be left empty because many people do not want to post their address around. This is a feature, not a bug .

    Cheers-Admin

    Posted by Taivo08:37, 30 11 2007chazychaz@linkinpark.ee
On thing I don't understand, why it doesn't check if one of the fields is empty. Although it is set to 1. Anyways it's a great script.

Thanks for the use of your wonderful script. I designed rodeofan.org.This week I needed a guestbook so people could have a place to express condolences for a double traffic fatality which happened in a rodeo cowboy's family. The script works great. The readme.txt says "Drop the php_guestbook.php and the admin.html files IN THE SAME DIRECTORY where the html page you wish your visitors to comment on is located. Set the permissions of this directory to writable (777) otherwise you will get an error. I had to leave mine at the default of 755, otherwise I got a server error. All the other chmod's worked set the way the readme instructed. Thanks again.

Thanks Andrea, I just found the line of code and made the changes. The posts now look fab! Well done for creating the only really free php guestbook I could find anywhere.
    Grazie!

    Posted by Andrea18:17, 27 11 2007me@here.com
    Glaux,

Sure. In the php_guestbook.php file, line 42, the is defined. You will see that within this variable the Andrea, me@here.com and variables are surrounded by some html code that defines how the name, email and message will look like when posted in the guestbook. So you can play around with this html code in the variable until the posts look like you want. Please mind that once you make a change, to see the results you have to make a new post

Hi, I've installed the guestbook on my webpage and it works great. It says in the script "YOU CAN EDIT THE HTML IN THE post VARIABLE TO CHANGE THE APPEARANCE OF YOUR POSTS AND ADAPT IT TO YOUR WEB LAYOUT" but I couldn't work out how to do this. Could you give me an example of how I could change the script to display the posts with, say, a blue Verdana font and with the horizontal line centered rather than aligned left?
    Thanks for your help.

Which way is she spinning? You might see her turn clockwise or anti-clockwise. But it you look long enough you might change your mind, and then change your mind again...

No tricks here, just an amazing optical illusion

    Dan,

This is a meta-tag. You should add it in the HEAD section of your guestbook html file itself, not in php_guestbook.php

    Greetings;

Would you be able to quote me for the work?

What I really want, if it is possible, is to run 2 copies of the guestbook (messages stored seperately) and then....

Add comment 1 >> feeds into >> Display page 1 and shows 3 entries) and also feeds into Display page 2 (which acts as an archive)

Add comment 2 >> Feeds into >> Display page 1 and shows 1 comment (yep, with the 3 from the other page) >> and feeds the archived to Display page 3.

ADD COMMENT PG1 ADD COMMENT PG2
    (3 Comments) Display Page 1 / (1 comment)
    | |
Display Page 2 Display Page 3

Does this make sense? Could you quote me to my email please?

    thnks

    dan
