First thing, I would like to say what a great script this is, just what I was looking for as a testimonial system with a few tweaks.

However, my knowledge of tweaking is a bit limited with PHP and I want to add a feature whereby the name can be ticked to make it private as well.

I have been through the obvious, added another field called “show_name” and treated it the same as in every other place in the various PHP files where I can find a “show_email” and “show_message” but I must be missing something.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Paul

Todd, sorry about that. Looks like there is a problem under some specific configuration of ie8. I can post with no issues from IE8 myself on at least 3 different PCs, so it is hard to track this now for me at the moment.

Hi, Andrea. Thanks for your wonderful programming. I lost my original iWeb site and am rebuilding it. I tried to use the new PHP Guestbook, after a week of trying, have gone back to the old version, which is perfect for my little family site. I'm having trouble, though, centering my Posts. I'm not sure if you are familiar with iWeb, but when you enter code, you use a widget- this is perfectly centered. the posts come in below and to the extreme right. Can you help me figure this out? Thanks for any help.

hi, I have been using the free version for a while now, and for some reason the admin page has decided to stop working.
the rest of the php on my site is still fully functional.
my problem in detail:
the posting comments works fine.
click on admin, it takes you to the log in screen, however this is where it all goes wrong:
when you type in the password box, you can see the charactures, when you click login it takes you to a blank page. I have changed nothing about the website,
my site is here Bright Sparks

any bright ideas, if not I will have to try to re-insall the message board.

The answers are yes, if you use html and copy paste :)
and no. No followup e-mail. The guestbook admin gets an e-mail on each post however

Jeff there is a readme file in the zip. Installation require some minimal internet skills, such as the ability to upload files to your account with ftp, changing files permissions and possibly modify an html page, if you want to personalize the provided template. If you are unable to understand the instructions in the readme file, you might want to consider a guestbook hosted solution rather than our software. Best luck,
Admin

Mayra, since you are not the first to report that, I suspect that indeed there might be a problem under some specific configurations of IE8. For me it works fine in explorer. Unfortunately I will not be able to address this problem at the moment.
Best - Andrea

Posted by MayraDecember 19, 2010 - 06:37 pm
Andrea,

I just noticed that on your perfectly working guestbook (I am using it on an IE8 browser), it returns this response after I click the "Add Comment" button:

"Processing post...
If not redirected to the guestbook page, click here."

What did I miss?

Posted by MayraDecember 19, 2010 - 06:33 pm
Thanks for the answer Andrea. Your recommendation to use the "checked" in the syntax worked just as you stated. I'm so [embarrased] I didn't think of that! I was making it more complicated than it was. :-p

Any how, I do have one more question: Is there a compatability issue with IE8+? I keep getting a 500 server error after I add a comment instead redirecting to the page where the "guestbook.html" page is.

It works flawlessly in FF and Chrome. For some reason it does not seem to behave the same for me in IE8.

Thank you again for your reply.

Posted by AndreaDecember 18, 2010 - 03:06 pm
Mayra, the second one is easy:
in the guestbook page code, look for the checkbox code for the email:
type=checkbox name="show_email" value="no"
and add a "checked" at the end:

type=checkbox name="show_email" value="no" checked

this should make the private mail checkbox private.

For point number 1, it can be done with a little code writing. In case send me an e-mail.

Regards,

Admin

Thank you for making a simple to install guestbook. I tried and tested many script in my quest to find an easy script to work with...until I stumbled upon your "PHP Guestbook" and I am thankful.

I do have two questions:
#1. Is there any way to make emails mandatory?
#2. Can all emails be set to private by default?

Thanks in advance! -Mayra

Steve can you send me an e-mail with the guestbook url. And set the admin password to the default, so that I can try that. It could be a sessions problem related to a server misconfiguration, however it is strange that it was working yesterday but not today. If this is true, something MUST have changed.

Thank you, Andrea. I got everything back together without much trouble. Great functioning guestbooks. Today though, I am unable to do any administration functions. Working fine yesterday, and haven't made any changes since then. Now I can log in to admin okay via "index.html" or "admin.html" but whenever I click for any function, it takes me back to log in again or "your session has expired." The guestbooks have lots of formatting, so I don't want to have to re-install everything again. Is there a specific file I should look at or re-install?

Posted by AndreaOctober 30, 2010 - 08:52 pm
Steve, I suggest you make a backup of your posts folder, then make a new intallation, then put back the guestbook and the posts folder. Make sure you grant a 666 permission to the files in the posts folder after you restore it.
There is no special reason that would make you loose anything by simply deleting the IPs in configuration (that I can think of), so I am not sure about what happened to your installation. I suggest you reinstall ex novo as described above. Regards - Admin

HELP! I deleted the list of banned ip addresses in the central configuration, and when I hit "save" I lost every function, every post, in all of my website's comment boxes.

How can I restore my comment boxes, replies and everything?

Posted by AndreaOctober 30, 2010 - 07:08 pm
David, yes you have the same "problem", which rater than a problem is a lack of understanding about how the guestbook works. Your guestbook page is a normal, plain, static html page. If you upload a version without the posts, because you are working on your layout, it will remain without the posts until a new post is made or configuration is saved. Hope this helps. Regards - Admin

I may have a similar or same problem as another Dave (Oct. 10 2010). My problem concerns a new GB install. I inserted the reuquired form and script code into the site's already-existing home page. Everything works fine except one: A GB comment submission redirects back to the home page, at which time I can see the new comment and any other previous comments. However, when simply entering page directly, no comments appear.

Eco the posts are in the posts/posts.txt file. Hopefuly you make a backup before installing the new version? To restore the posts just put back the old posts.txt in the posts folder and grant 666 permission. Then make a new post.
Mind that if you make a new posts before doing that, all the old posts in the guestbook page will be lost. I suggest you make a backup of this html page right now.
If you do not have a backup of the posts.txt file, then you would have to re-enter all the posts manually by posting them again. However all the dates will be wrong at this point. You could then correct all the dates manually in the new posts file, however all this is kind of a nightmare, I hape you have a backup of your old posts file. Regards - Admin

Nick, made several test posts, all went fine. You are using at least one word that is spotted as banned. Just nail it down by breaking the message in pieces, until you get to the word that is blocking the post. Then go in configuration and edit the banned words list to allow it. The script is working just fine.

I cannot post comments like before. Everytime I try to do it I get this message: Your IP: ##.###.###.### status: logged .
Please, help!
I will be sending you a private e/mail with my loggin information.

Andrew, it looks like your server has the sessions folder for PHP misconfigured. If you e-mail me I will send you a fix that usually works.

When I go to admin.html, config guestbook and save I get "Wrong password or session expired" and the my settings are not saved. I tried several times with same result. What is wrong?

Tim this is the ajax verification. I suggest you just clean your browser's cache and try again. If this becomes a problem you can disable this in admin/configuration, although this is not recommended at all, captcha alone offers poor security.

Posted by AndreaSeptember 14, 2010 - 05:43 pm
Chris, this is a good point. I know I should at least do a FAQ to clean things up. Will address this in the future.
It is possible to install 2 guestbook on the same server, or more, if you use a different folder for each one. Or you use the WCS, but this is another story.
Best Regards - Admin

Posted by ChrisSeptember 14, 2010 - 01:46 pm
@staff - why oh why don't you have a separate guestbook for support and for demoing the software? from a support perspective - this is full of noise. doesn't seem very efficient to me, but that's just me. it is possible to set up 2 guestbooks on the same server, isn't it?

cheers for the good work!!

Henke, for the posts importing, you would have to convert the posts from your old guestbook to the format of the posts in this guestbook. You have to look at the format in the file posts/posts.txt and see. However, this is not that easy in fact, as some charachters are treated in a particular way before being inserted in the posts file, and then decoded at read time. Not easy. The easy thing to do is to put the old posts in a static page, called for example "Archive", and then link this page from the guestbook. See for example the archive links at the buttom of this page. I did this for different reasons from yours, however you could easily do that for your old posts. The "reply to" feature is not implemented in our scripts, good idea for a future development however at present this is not supported, sorry.
Best Regards - Admin

Posted by HenkeAugust 26, 2010 - 08:08 am
Another question:
If the user would like to post an answer to a post - this feature doesn't seem to be implemented. At least not in the free version?

Posted by HenkeAugust 26, 2010 - 06:15 am
Now here's a tedious one: how can you import an extended bunch of posts from another guestbook application? I tried via excel, but no good came out of that...

Posted by AndreaAugust 25, 2010 - 05:02 pm
Henke, just luck

Posted by HenkeAugust 25, 2010 - 04:56 pm
7 minutes, and there was a reply!! Now that's swift :-)

Posted by AndreaAugust 25, 2010 - 04:37 pm
Henke, the date format is currently:
F d, Y - h:i a
you can edit this in include/mixvar.php
See http://php.net/manual/en/function.date.php for details on this format.
The easier wy to make a translation is to make a swedish version of the file include/lang/eng/lang.php and then replace it in the eng folder.
Some bits and pieces could still be left to be edited in the source code, feel free to ask if you have problems.
Regards-Admin

Posted by HenkeAugust 25, 2010 - 04:30 pm
Hi.
Is there a way to change the date format?
If I intended to translate the whole lot into Swedish, which would be the easiest way to go about it?
Thanks in advance

T, thanks for your kind words and useful feedback. I should build a FAQ, indeed, as many questions are the same over and over, will do that in a near future. Regards-Andrea

Working great! This has been fun to look at so far. Thanks.

In the PDF readme for the free version, the submit button code has some extra spaces, I believe.

No spaces between "<" and "input" and no spaces between "type" and "=".

Also, if only I could have a way to search through your feedback guestbook to find the responses you've already given! And Amy's kinda mean, huh?

Ah, OK. Had a look on the help forum for my ISP - it seems they are in the middle of an upgrade and PHP isn't universally available! Sounds like a botch job if you ask me, they've been at it for 12 months now and I managed to get an earlier version of the guestbook working so I must've had PHP at some point in the past...so nice of them to let their customers know about the changes!!!

Thanks for your help.

Colin, what are you talking about? Which bioweb link? What kind of spam are you getting? Please note that if you post your e-mail address in ANY public forum as you ar doing here, you are bound to get spam sent to this address. Clicking on a link will NOT get you any spam. No way. Will you please explain better what are you talking about, seems to me that you are way out of track here.

I am wanting to purchase the moderated version, but first I need to make sure I can get this nifty code to do what I need it to do.
I am an html web designer. I have setup two guestbooks.. one in testimonials sub directory and on in a supporters subdirectory. That seems to be working fine.
I need to change (remove or add) to the fields that show up in the posts.
For Testimonials I want Name, Company, State, Email and the text Message.
For Supporters I just want Name, Company and state... no message...
I tried editing the php config file but only got errors... Can someone help? I believe this should not be too difficult, but I am not a PHP programmer... : (
Thanks for any help.

Sunil yes, there is the captcha. For sample installations see the links in this page, upper right. You can download the free version and test it, this is very much like the enhanced version. Then, if you like it and need the advanced features, fell free to make a donation. Otherwise just use the free version, it is fully featured with no limitations.

Also ulrich, the blockquote is a useful tag, not sure why it should not work. Anyway it is very easy to customise what is allowed and what is forbidden in administration. There is a dedicated and easily customizable list of blocked tags and code elements in the configuration section.

Hi Andrea,

I have implemented the guestbook in a rather interesting way using Incomedia's X5 to build my site www.colin-allison.com.

You do however need to gain access by using the menu and not linking direct.

Shell for the posts formatting refer to the posts template (in admin, configuration) and to the file posts.css in the styles folder. Regards-Admin

Posted by ShellAugust 01, 2010 - 06:45 pm
Thanks - getting there now. Can you change the post font colour - cant see this one

Posted by AndreaAugust 01, 2010 - 05:52 pm
Shell, most things in the template are controlled by the styles in styles/guestbook.css. The relevant styles for the form are the formdiv, formtext, form-els-bcg and makepriv. To see what controls what exactly, look at the classes of the various forms elements in the guestbook.html source code, or go by trial and error (modify the guestbook.css file for the items above and look at the results on the form). For instance the background color of the form input elements is controlled by form-els-bcg. In summary, you have to edit the guestbook.css file in the styles folder to change the colors.
Regards-Admin

Posted by ShellAugust 01, 2010 - 05:42 pm
Hi - working ok I think so far. How do you change the colours on the form - they're nice but they just dont match my site!
I cant see anything obvious in the code..

Hi Andrea, sorry - the folders hadnt uploaded, just the htm files - it looks like its working now, I have to fiddle around with the configuring and see if its all okay now. What a dipstick!!

Posted by AndreaAugust 01, 2010 - 01:52 pm
Shell, functions.php is a file that is inside the "include" folder. You should check that this was uploaded correctly. You can check this with your ftp client software. If you post a private message with your installation URL I will have a look. Regards-Admin

Posted by ShellAugust 01, 2010 - 12:51 pm
Thanks Andrea, sorry to be a pain - how do I tell missing files and whether php is active. I just uploaded the download files and set permissions - there is no mention of "include/function.php"

Posted by AndreaAugust 01, 2010 - 12:27 pm
Shell, you need to make sure that PHP is working and that all the files are uploaded. If you get the error "undefined function encodemessage" it looks to me that PHP is working fine, but some files are missing (include/function.php), you should check this out. Concerning FP03, it should not matter what you use for your site, as long as PHP is active. However I am not familiar with FP, so I cannot tell for sure.
Regards-Admin

Posted by ShellAugust 01, 2010 - 12:19 pm
Hi Admin - I have uploaded the "download" into a separate folder on my site but when I navigate to guestbook.html I get the error message quoted. The web is created in FP03 - should I be installing php or something? All I did was upload the download files.
Can the other pages in the web just work as before? I only need the guestbook page to be php as FP wont let you create one without paying extra money for extentions
Thank you

Posted by AndreaJuly 31, 2010 - 09:19 am
So Colin, every time you modify the page and reupload it (without the messages), you can login to admin and just save configuration (even without making changes) to have the messages back. Hope this helps.

Posted by AndreaJuly 31, 2010 - 09:17 am
Colin, when you work on the guestbook page, say you edit it on your PC and then upload it, there you have a page without the messages. Then you make a post, and the page is repopulated with the messages stored in the database. The guestbook page is just a static html page that is only modified when the script comes to action (on post or on save configuration or on delete/edit message) OR when you upload a new version of it. If you upload a new version without the messages, it will stay without messages until the script comes to action (see above). Hope this makes the thing clear.
Best Regards-Admin

Colin, it should be very feasible, however I am afraid I cannot help much on this one. I would guess you have to make so that when you import the page, the html of this page is suitable and ready for insertion in your page where you use the iframe. You have to tune it up.

Love the product! Set up was easy and working fine apart from below:

Just a small glitch though, in admin the 'Enable captcha verification' is checked 'yes', and save config clicked. However when I post (test post) on the guestbook it allows me to post without entering the CAPTCHA. If I go back to admin, the 'Enable captcha verification' has reverted to "No". Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks, Chris

Posted by AndreaJuly 28, 2010 - 05:44 pm
Colin, if you look at the source code of your page with the guestbook (http://www.colin-allison.com/guest_book.html), you will see that clearly there is a problem: you have a incorporated the guestbook html as it is, with the head, body and everything in a page that already has it's own head and body. You need to make a cleaner integration, and then you will be able to adjust the details.

If requesting a token from token.php before submitting the form is anti-bot, then why not have the bot go to token.php - then submit that with the form.

The bot can exactly mimic what the browser does, with the same headers.

Nicole, the problem is in the javascript. If it works with the provided page as it is and then is does not work after you edit the page, it means that you have done something to the javascript. I suggest you start over your styling from the original page, taking great care not do delete any javascript while doing that.

Walter this is the ajax verification in action. Are you using the provided guestbook.html page? There is some important javascript there.

Are you sure that in configuration, the name of the guestbook file is correct and that the guestbook html file is in the same folder as the php_guestbook.php script?

Posted by mathiJune 27, 2010 - 08:17 pm
Yes i did
but now i've a new problem xD
it always show that i didn't have the link or the guestbook page name is false when i want post something.
but it's correct :S

Posted by AndreaJune 27, 2010 - 07:24 pm
Mathi are your messages logged in the edit/delete part of the admin section? Also double check that the permission of the html page is 666.

It's because when you work on the files and upload a new version of the guestbook (without the posts in it), it is a plain html page, it will remain without the posts until the script is called by posting a new message, or also if you save configuration in admin. Regards-Admin

Posted by corzakJune 21, 2010 - 05:13 pmzak_corey@yahoo.com
Why are all previous comments gone when page loads . . . then re-appear after a comment is made?

Posted by PaulJune 20, 2010 - 12:42 pm
Andrea, thank you for your reply. I'm not a php developer, but am computer literate and have a reasonable grasp of programming.
Extra fields are included in one of your sample websites, "Camping Trip" and that is what I'm trying to achieve. If you are able to email me privately with any tips I'd appreciate it.
I'm hoping to pay the donation to get the full version, but would like to get this option working.
Thanks Andrea.

Posted by AndreaJune 20, 2010 - 05:29 am
Paul, it is complicated, you would have to modify lots of things in the script to do that. Are you a php developer? If so maybe I can provide some tips.

Hi .. love the program, but have a question. If I add an extra field to the Guestbook, e.g. a 'Country' field, what do I need to add to make that entry appear in the message?
Obviously I can change the appearance of the page and edit the posts template in the web admin/configuration, but the entry doesn't appear. Help.

Posted by AndreaJune 17, 2010 - 11:15 am
Mohammed, how the posts looks like depend on two things:

- The posts template, in the web admin/configuration
- The posts style sheet, in the file styles/posts.css

By editing those two elements you will be able to make the posts look like you want. If you are happy with the "shape" of the posts, you can edit the colors, font and font sizes by editing the CSS file posts.css.

Posted by AndreaJune 15, 2010 - 02:01 am
Aivars, I would like to help, however until I cannot experience the problem myself I can hardly fix it :( Sorry about that, would love to hear from other people that are using the script if it works fine for them in IE. As you say, IE has a reputation for adopting tricky behaviours under certain circumstances.

Helo, Andrea! I did all exactly as You said. All is working perfectly except on ie6-ie8. I got error http 500 and when refresh there is message unrecognised call. But post is made. It is notion that explorer somehow can't refresh post result.
May be problem is in server programming.

Thanks

Posted by AndreaJune 14, 2010 - 05:13 pm
Aivars, out of the box: as provided in the zip file, just upload, grant permissions. Don't know why you have this problem. If you want, please post the address, maybe as a private message, and I will have a look. I am using the same as you here, and it works with IE, so not sure why it does not work for you.

Regards,

Andrea

Aivars, this very message is posted from internet explorer 8 and this guestbook uses the version currently distributed. So as far as I can tell, this works fine in explorer. Did you try your installation with the script "out of the box", with the provided guestbook.html page? Let me know. Regards-Andrea

Hi, dear Guestbook team!
I have a free version! It works perfectly on Mozilla, Opera and G.Chrome but not on IE (any version). Posting a message I got HTTP 500 error or 'unrecognised call'. I try to change file/folder permissions, as it is suggested, but no results.

Guestbook script is very nice,
Please help to solve the problem...

Hopefully, Aivars

The free and enhanced versions are now location-aware based on the poster's IP address. This allows you to know where your visitors are from, and to ban entire countries from posting, which can be useful at times for spam control.

In the very last version (0.6.5) uploaded a few minutes ago, the ajax verification tool and the captcha can be individually enabled or disabled in administration. This is handy for testing if you have problems, and also allows to have a setup like the one on this guestbook, with the ajax verification enabled and the captcha disabled.

Phil, do you get this with the provided sample guestbook.html page? What you are getting is a message from the ajax verification tool, this requires all the javascript in the guestbook page to be in place.
If you get this with the provided guestbook.html page, please let me have some details, maybe in a private message, and we will look at this. If you instad get this with your own page, check carefully that all the javascript is in place, look at guestbook.html as a reference for the correct code. The important stuff is in the HEAD section of the html.

We are working hard to improve the current software releases. The main upcoming feature is a better compliance with HTML 4 standards and the use of CSS for formatting.
Here's a snapshot of the new default template that will be provided with the next distributions of the free and enhanced versions:

The release should be within a month or so. Stay tuned for info.

I sent an email to admin but got no response, and I noticed that in your readme file that you state that you can't get email support with the free version. And no, I don't really know where to start. Like I said, I am new to all of this and there is no real information any site that I go to that really explains indepth what to do with the code. Yea I read the instructions, but for someone like me who doesn't do this all the time, I need more information. I don't get where I'm suppose to send this email to, I already sent an email.

Posted by AndreaApril 28, 2010 - 09:26 pm
Amy, the thing is I have an hard time at understandig what your problem is from the post you made. If you send me an e-mail explaining exactly what the problem is you will get a reply. The money is not the point here, this is not a business. You will notice that all the guestbooks linked to the upper right are installations of free versions.
You say you have "created a notepad document for the code given", not sure about what this mean. You say "you have PHP installed on your computer" however PHP will work on the server, not on your computer. The files are supposed to be uploaded to your web account, from what you say I am not 100% sure you did this?
Indeed a minimal understanding of basic principles of web management are required to use this script, as most other scripts. Anyway if you still want to use this please send an e-mail, hope I will be able to help.

I just tried to download the free version tonight and am having problems already (yes, I am a complete newbie). I created a new notepad document for the code given, and was able to upload it onto the web. I already have PHP installed on my computer and created a document for the code. Hi Andrea, found the problem. My hosting company marketrends.net is in the process of moving to Sacramento so all the servers are down for the weekend. However we found another php file that was placed in the main directory of my domain right before they shut down. The file was removed and we suspect that the bot spam will hault. But can't actually verify because of the move. It would be similar to network solutions moving all their servers, generators, batteries, solar panels and more on one choosen weekend with big trucks to another city lol. Anyways I think everything is going to be OK in the long run. As for my email
I'm not eally concerned about it being exposed. I am very much in control over that. With anti-spam filters, ISP blocking capabilites, and all spam is forwared to spamcop.net as well as my host so they send out warnings and add to my spam filter. I will know more on Monday.

Nelson, one reason you might be getting spam at your "info" email address is that you posted here twice your address without making it private. I have now made your address private in all your posts here, to limit "damages". Regards-Admin

Posted by AndreaFebruary 26, 2010 - 05:10 am
Nelson, I do not get any spam with this guestbook and I have this installed for many years now. It was spammed at the very beginning, but the introduction of the captchas was a final solution. I hardly see how you can get spam to your guestbook just minutes after installation, this does not make much sense to me honestly. Moreover, no way you can get e-mails from the script if you remove your e-mail from the admin. My guess is that you might be getting spam, but this is not from the guestbook.

I removed my email addy from the admin and still being hit with spam from my guestbook! Grrrrrrrrr

Posted by NelsonFebruary 25, 2010 - 05:41 pm
OK I just found out some bad news, my guestbook is still being hit by spam bots. The scripts sent me over 100 spam emails from the exact same IP's and sites placed in my ban list. Whats worse is that when I choose NO email notification in the admin and click save configuration, log out of admin then relog in, I find it has changed back to YES. So what I have done is use the sammers email address for my admin email so it will bounce back to him. But thats only one out of many.....

Actually my customization was not complete until just a few mins ago. The page you were seeing was just a temp page while the whole time I was working on it via a secret test page. It's all complete now. You can see it Here

Yeah I added a few extra bells and whistles lol. Feel free to add it to your cool install links if you like. No offence but I felt it needed a more "manly" appearance for my site.

Hello Samantha, I thought I did send you an e-mail but might be wrong. My suggestion was to try a 755 permission for the folders, instead of 777. Let me know.

Hi Andrea, could you help me out? I posted a private message on this board earlier but no answer. I'm having trouble with the enhanced version. Keep getting internal server error. All permissions are correct I think. Any I idea what I could be doing wrong? The "main" file is call "gbook" (contains all guestbook files). It's located within the "public_html" folder which contains the rest of the website data.

Posted by AndreaFebruary 25, 2010 - 10:22 am
Hello Nelson, I think you did a great customization job, congrats. To make the smilies window larger, the code is in the html page itself, it is a javascript function called Openchild, and it is now set to 200x250, you should find it easily and you can easily edit the width and height, I see how you added many smilies of your own and indeed a larger window would be suitable. If you cannot find it let me know.

OK I fixed it. The config.php file had permission set at 640. I changed the permissions to 666. was able to change the password. OK well it seems to be working ok for now.

Now I have to (tweek) incorporate the easy_php_guestbook code into my own html file to match my site's content, color & style. I have my own css style and I hope the script does not freak out when it meets my other java scripts, CSS menu and flash incorperated in my site. Gonna take a break now and have dinner, then I will be back here later tonight to work on it more. Thanks so much for your times.if you find any MP3's you would like to download from my site just let me know and I will hook you up. All songs are written and preformed by yours truly.

After a few days of testing, and if everything is compatible I will still donate for the enhanced version.

Don't know what lind of music you like, but Let me know if you find a song or two that you like from my site ok?.

Nelson this is weird indeed. You can download the config.php file, open in a source code editor, modify the password manually, re-upload, set/verify permission.
By the way are you sure that right now the permission for the config file is 666?

Posted by NelsonFebruary 23, 2010 - 05:39 pm
Yeah it's fixed. Now have another problem.

However after logging into the admin it will not allow me to change the password??????

And YES I clicked the save configuration button.

Attempted in Firefox and IE8 to no avail.

Please advise.........

Posted by NelsonFebruary 23, 2010 - 05:28 pm
I think it's working now, care to verify?

http://www.nelson-rogers.com/guestbook/easy_php_guestbook.html

However after logging into the admin and changing the password, the changes do not take effect after clicking the
[SAVE CONFIGURATION] button.

??????????????????????

Nelson, looks like you fixed it. Feel free to make a donation now . Just kidding.
Cheers-Admin

Posted by AndreaFebruary 23, 2010 - 05:05 pm
Nelson, yes, login to admin.html, go to configuration.
Concerning the permission, as things stand now the script cannot write to the html page. So I would:
- triple check the permission again. If it is indeed 666 then:
- try a 644 permission instead of 666 for this file (shot in the dark). If this fails, try again with 666 . If all of this is useless:
- contact your provider and ask if there is some server configuration that prevents scripts to write to html files.

Let me know.

Regards-Admin

Posted by NelsonFebruary 23, 2010 - 04:59 pm
Yes positive the easy_php_guestbook.html has permissions set at 666. I hope I can change the name of easy_php_guestbook.html to index.html later on, as the directory is already named guestbook.

Also when you said the password can be changed in admin, in the configuration section, are you refering to the admin.html? or??

Posted by AndreaFebruary 23, 2010 - 04:41 pm
Nelson, I suggest you do not make a donation until you have fixed the problems with the current installation. You will have exactly the same issues with the enhanced. Regards-Admin

Posted by NelsonFebruary 23, 2010 - 04:39 pm
Also I have no problem making a donation, however I will have to transfer funds to my paypal and I think they hold it for 5 days. Currentl there is only 2.98 in my account lol I think you will need more than that lol. I normally use perl scripts for this kinda thing but my perl script was getting hit by spam bots, so that is why I am looking for a spam proof guestbook to replace my old one with.

Posted by AndreaFebruary 23, 2010 - 04:38 pm
Nelson, so you are positive that your easy_php_guestbook.html has 666 permission? If not, then it appears that despite the permission, the script cannot write to the page. Everything else looks fine, the messages are logged as you can see by logging in to admin.html and going to edit/delete. The password can be changed in admin, in the configuration section. Let me know.

Posted by AndreaFebruary 23, 2010 - 04:06 pm
Hi Nelson, this very guestbook is a demo, and all the guestbooks in the upper-right part of this page are installations of this software, mostly of the free version. You can download the free version and use that. If you need the additional features of the enhanced (pagination, reserved name for admin, no link to us in the guestbook static pages etc..) you can consider a donation later on.

I always encourage users to start with the free version, it is a full featured application, not a demo, perfectly suitable to add comments to an existing web page, or to create a guestbook ex-novo. Many people will be and actually are happy with this one. Consider avoiding a donation

OK wonderful. if I have any problems can I email you at that email address you sent me the line of code with?

Posted by AndreaJanuary 07, 2010 - 07:05 pm
Arria, you are advised to make a new install in a dedicated folder that you can call WCS. Read the manual carefully and feel free to send me an e-mail if you need support. And yes, you will have to add the line. Also do this: create a folder called "posts" in the WCS folder and grant 755 permission.

Mind that once you have tested the script you can get a refund if you are not happy for whatever reason (for example you realise this is not what you expected), so this is a safe donation.

ok sounds wonderful I will be downloading the enhanced here in just a minute. how do I change the file from what I have now to the enhanced? will I have to add the line of code again too?

Posted by AndreaJanuary 07, 2010 - 06:57 pm
Arria with the WCS (not the enhanced) you can put the comments on many different html pages and control everything from a central administration. See for example: http://games.cellbiol.com. This works well if the number of pages is reasonable, say 10-400. You can have more, however if you find yourself needing so many pages with comments, you should consider a MySQL based blogging platform instead of our flat file database scripts such as the WCS. Let me know if you have other questions.

awesome. two quick questions.... what is the captcha page? lol and what are the benifits from getting the enhanced? I plan on making it so people can comment on each of my articles so I will be putting this commenting system on many pages.

Posted by AndreaJanuary 07, 2010 - 06:46 pm
Arria, I have adjusted your configuration, it works. Make sure you reload the captcha page once to get a fresh code when you post next time, read the warning on the captcha page.

So now you can get the enhanced version

Thanks for the fast response!

My add-on is where I registered a domain name and it is hosted on the same server acct as the main domain. When you type in the add -on name no www.subdomainname.mainname.com necessary. I just type the www.addondomainname.com.

Posted by AndreaDecember 16, 2009 - 07:10 pm
Rich you are correct about the IP. If you don't want to ban any IP just put something like "jhvbkhj" in the IP field, the script will work fine.

On a subdomain you should have no particular issue, see this, go around, each page has comments managed through the WCS. The thing is, you have to make a dedicated install of the WCS in the subdomain folder for it to work fine, you cannot manage guestbooks on a subdomain from a WCS on the main domain. Not sure what you mean by add on.

ALain, this ought to be a local caching problem, the feature you describe is not included in the guestbook, there is no permament banning of IPs unless you include the IP in the banned list in administration manually.

The enhanced version and the WCS do not require you to link back from your static pages. You are free to modify the code and use it to install a guestbook or comments system for yourself or your clients if you are a webmaster. You can charge your clients for installation and/or customization of the software for a particular install. Conversely, reselling or otherwise redistributing the code as a script package is strictly forbidden by our licence terms and will be actively investigated and prosecuted by legal means

Hello Linda,

to solve the issue just login to your admin.html page, then go into configure.

In the first field, replace:

easy_php_guestbook.html

with

guestbook.html

This will fix it.

Once you are there you should also fix the guestbook URL (put your own) and the e-mail addresses.

site to the server (except for the wcs folder) and now all reactions from
visitors have been gone.. they are still on the server but i have to post
a new reaction on each guestbook to view all previous reactions again
otherwise all earlier reactions are not visible.. since i have 351
guestbooks it is a lot of work to post a new reaction in each guestbook..
the question is : is there a short cut so all guestbooks will show the
reactions again?

best ,

roeben

Hello guys,

1) Where can I find the "I'm human" htm so I can translate it into Spanish. That is the reason I have it disabled and Spam is killing me.

2) How can I prohibit any type of web link ? I'm looking for sort of a wild card character for the forbidden string list like "http://*" would avoid posting links. This is also because spam posts always have a link.

3) If you're interested in a Spanish translation just contact me. I'd be more than happy to help.

Thanks in advance :-)

Don, the reason the posts are "disappearing" is that you are still working on the page and reuploading it, thus replacing the one with the messages. When you post a new message, the page is repopulated with all the posts (taken from the database). So if you do not want the posts to "disappear" stop uploading new versions of the page. Or, after you have uploaded the new page, go in admin and just save configuration, this will refresh the page and put the messages back.

Hello Al. If you get a download "proposal" for a .php file, it means that PHP is not active on your server. It is a server configuration problem.

Hi Andrea,

I tried the test version of this. During the installation, following the pdf instruction, everything is working until
the point when it mentioned, ==>

b) Configure guestbook in the admin section
Login to the admin section (visit admin.html) with the default administrator password "pass"
(without quotes), go to the "configure guestbook" page and edit the essential variables at the top.

After I entered password, which is pass and i pressed
the "Go To Admin Section" and a file download window pops
up and asked me OPEN OR SAVE. Either way, it keeps me
circling around the same pop up screen.

Can you kindly help,

Al

Rick, sound like php is not active anymore on your server, browser should not matter. Try visiting with firefox and see if you get the same. Again sounds like PHP is disabled on the server, not a local problem.

I used to be able to set up this guestbook without any problems. Then I installed IE 7 and when I go to admin.html page, put in password a window opens asking if I want to open or save file. If I open it opens a php editor, is this something in the version I am using or is there a setting in IE Explorer 7 I don't have set correctly?

Thank you and have a great day.

READ THIS if you are considering this product

I am writing to let you know about the excellent support I received from Andrea regarding a problem I had with installation. The problem was something on my end, and Andrea provided advice throughout the day. When I was still unable to resolve the issue, Andrea logged onto my website and fixed the problem for me. My guestbook is now up and working like a charm!!!

This happened on a Saturday. This service was for the free version of the software (I haven't spent a penny YET). This is a level of service I have rarely encountered among even large corporations.

If you are considering this product, I can wholeheartedly tell you that you won't be disappointed with the kind, professional support you'll recieve if you should encounter a problem.

I just thought you should know,
and I wanted to publicly say THANK YOU to Andrea

If a great time offset is required (Sydney, Australia user - Host in USA) Time offset can be changed manually in the global_conf.php file (at the end)
$time_offset='+17hrs';

Ray, a php page is the same as an html page for the script. If you change the page you have to update the guestbook page name in admin configuration and remember to grant the 666 permission to the guestbook page.

Works fine on a html page but when I change that page to a php page it will not work.

Does the guestbook have to be on a html page?

Youhave a great guest book, easily configureable, but I have a problem. In your pdf file you say to:
- Set the permissions of the main folder to writable (777). Some windows servers require this
permission to be set to 755 instead
- Set the permissions of the "posts" folder to writable (777). Some windows servers require this
permission to be set to 755 instead
- Set the permission of the include/conf.php file to 666 (read and write permission by all)
otherwise you be unable to edit the guestbook configuration
- Edit the html guestbook file as described below and then grant 666 permission to this file:

I don't know how or where to do that, can you help me on that.

I don't see an example of a website using your WCS on multiple page, nor can I find the documentation here. I'm very interested, but reluctant to buy the script without more information.

In comments published in the Los Angeles Times and confirmed Thursday by his spokeswoman, attorney Ed Chernoff said his client did not know which drugs Jackson might have been taking or whether he was addicted.

"When he accepted the job, he was not aware of any specific requirements regarding medications that Michael Jackson was taking or any addictions that he was suffering from," Chernoff told the Times.

In a quote confirmed by his spokesman, Chernoff said that it was only after Murray moved to Los Angeles in May that "he realized that Michael Jackson had some very unusual problems."

Murray did not conduct drug tests on Jackson and had no way of knowing, other than from Jackson himself, whether he was taking other drugs, Chernoff's spokeswoman, Miranda Sevcik, told CNN.

Investigators, trying to determine whether anyone should be charged in Jackson's death, have searched Murray's home and two clinics for evidence of drugs he may have given the singer.

One search warrant implied that police suspect Jackson was a drug addict. It said there was "probable cause to believe" that the searches would uncover evidence of excessive prescribing, prescribing to an addict, prescribing to or treating an addict and manslaughter.

It also cited "probable cause to believe" that the premises contained "records, shipping orders, distribution lists, use records relating to the purchase, transfer ordering, delivery and storage of propofol (Diprivan)."

All seems back to normal now. Thanks for the script guys ! (all the way from Mexico)

Hello,

I just installed the free version. Thanks a 1000 in the first place !

Now, I was able to post 2 test messages, but after that, the script asks me to link to its home page. Funny thing is that the script is untouched and the link is there at the bottom of the page.

Thanks in advance for any help !

Hi Andrea! I meant that I had changed the time set for the location where I live, but when I post a new message, the time isn't right.
And another problem - why doesn't new messages appear if I change the text style that I want for messages? Where should I change that?

Hello Iris, what do you mean it is not what it should be. Does changing the time offset has any effect on the time reported on NEW posts? The change will only affect new posts, it is not "retroactive".

Best-Andrea

Hi Andrea! I managed to fix the problem. Now I would have only one question. How could I change the time set that it could be suitable for my location? I changed it on the admin page (yes the configuration works now), but when I post a message on the guestbook, the time isn't the one it should be.

Hello Ben, no it is not easy to add other fields. Concening the second point, make sure the copyright notice is placed outside of the comments start comments end lines. Place it below the comments end line for example.

HI,

I just downloaded your free script. Not bad. I need more than this offers so I am thinking of paying the 20 for the full version. I want to know is it easy to add more text to the form so I can get more info than just the name and email?
I would like to add their location and possibly their url name.

Also, the free script works fine, accept everytime you make and entry, it takes the "powered by" off the page and when you want to enter another entry, a page says you must have the link back for this script to work.

Posted by AndreaJuly 22, 2009 - 05:32 am
Iris,

I suggest you start over and follow instructions carefully, you are clearly having a permissions problem. For the folders (guestbook and posts) first try 777 for both. Then, if you have problems, change both to 755 and then try posting again.

This is about it, there are no secrets.

Some rare hosts do not allow php files to be set at 666 (you need this for the conf file). If this is your case, I suggest you change script.

Best Regards-Andrea
