All said and done I shipped the item but not as requested, I shipped it guaranteed with insurance and proof of signature. I just realized I got scammed when I got home entered the tracking number and sent the email then I kept checking on ebay and on paypal and realized there was no money and payment was not received. This was my first time selling an item on ebay and I didn't know what to check for and had never heard of the Nigeria scams. I am hoping to recover the item by cancelling the shipping tomorrow, but either way I got scammed big time and feel like a real idiot, all the signs were there, but I was too excited to see them.

its the first time ive ever tried selling anything on ebay and im very worried about sending the item as a guy at my local post office advised me not to send to nigeria.

Ebay has advised that my account has been suspended as i have not sent and tracking numbers to paypal but it sounds sooooo dodgy!!! arghhhhhhh

I have just sold an item worth £350 on a local Stuff 4 Sale site. The buyer said he was from Nigeria and was buying this for his girlfriends son but he is working in the US so could not collect the item. The son I assumed was in Lagos,Nigeria as this was the address he gave for posting. He wanted to know the total price and shipping cost and said he would pay immediately.I asked him how he intended to make payment and he said he would use Paypal. At first I thought that this would be secure until I made some investigations on the net and found that there is a scam going around involving Paypal. All the Nigerian scams appear to be coming from the same locations.
Anyway,I told this guy that if he wanted to complete the deal he had to send me cash in British ££s and that I wouldnt accept any form of money transfer whatsoever from Nigeria.I am just waiting now to see if he replies, but I doubt this very much.If it does happen,I will place another posting.

Mike88, let's try to avoid bashing the whole country for the actions of a few on this forum. Nigeria is a beautiful country with many honest people, with a huge poverty problem. The reaction is understandable given your personal losses, but we should know better.

Thank you everyone for your posts. I was selling my laptop on craigslist and received emails from two separate people offering to pay $550 or $575 total (to cover shipping) for a laptop I'm only asking $400 for. However, the mix of both formal and very bad Engish, as well as the willingness to dish out twice as much as it costs to send the item to Nigeria, made it seem extremely fishy. Not only that, but the grammar in the email from "paypal" was terrible and didn't even originate from paypal's usual address. Everyone's posts here helped confirm my suspicions that this was a scam, even tho it didn't happen on ebay like so many of them do. Thanks for your help!

i almost got scammed too. fake paypal email and all.

so i had this idea of how to shut down and punish those scammers.

1. set up an expensive listing of some awesome thing
2. wait for a scammer
3. ask scammer if they want additional pictures
4. attach virus to email/picture file
5. shut down their computer

I'm not a computer genius so i dont know if that's even possible but its certainly exciting to think that maybe we can start shutting off some 250,000 scammers in nigeria

Hi, i Just recently got scammed the sameee EXACTT WAYY. I sold a pair of shoes and some lady offers me 480. which isnt outlandish. but at the time i was expecting around 300 due to the poor economy. so i jumped on it. and like you i did not seee the signs. she asked me to ship to nigeria. i agreed and so called "paypal" sent me confirmation saying that i will be credited upon tracking receipt. so i went and sent it. now its been two days since i sent it monday and post office was closed yesturday. now i have no oppurtunity to stop shipment and no money. I think all Post offices should either impede any further shipment to nigeria or at least verify the buyer. I believe that either this forum or anybody should stand up and do something about this. its been going on for years now.

Just last month i was scammed into sending my laptop to Nigeria and by the time i realized it was too late to recall and the USPS would not help at all nor give me any info about what Postal service it transfered to in Nigeria. Hopelessly i contacted the national courier service in Nigeria via email and over the course of a month was actually able to have the computer recalled via permission from Brian Mcivor of USPS in DC. The computer had a dent but to have it returned after thinking it was gone and feeling like an idiot for getting scammed was nice. Hopefully this can help someone.
